A friend has been promised a Cat D6 for free, if we can start the thing. Let me assure you I am not going to give up easily! 👍

Although the Cat seems to have been well looked after, and stored under tarpaulins, we were not able to start the Pony engine first time we tried.

First of all, the sparkplug cords were pulled from the magneto when we got there, I need to know which cable goes where..
Secondly I think the carb needs a thorough cleaning, I will look into that next time, but was hoping someone might have some tips on the "does and don'ts" of this field?
And lastly, I don't think the compression is "all that". I noticed there is a tap on each sylinder, even if I close these, I suspect air is leaking from the taps.

I'd like to hear form anyone with experience on D6 starting procedures, and from any one who have info on the Pony engines!

Thanks!

Normally you would told to do a "SEARCH" function first as this is discussed at least once a week, BUT this time I would recommend just reading back through the previous 5 pages of posts as there is a ton of information on the issues of magneto and carb problems on the D2 and D4 engines which share the same parts with the D6 you are having issues on.

I agree with Moulding! Getting it home gives you the abilty to get everything in good order for the pony to run with out any time constraints or dragging tools to and from the place where it currently sits.

I also want info on HOW to start the Cat, if / when we get the Pony running. There are levers for starterclutch, for decompression, for trottle and one I don't know what is for, this is what I am trying to find out, as well as the "mecanical issues" of the Pony..

Hey Runar500,

Where is the Cat located? Maybe you should ask if somebody lives close by. There are a lot of tricks to these old Cats. We could probally walk you through it, but if you are not familiar with them, someone could get hurt. If you are not sure of what lever does what, when starting, problems can occur. If you are local, maybe someone could come by and give you a hand and a safety walk through.-glen

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
