Having a running hot codition on my pony motor. I know from previous posts that the waterways under the pony are at right angles, and small leading to a plugging up condition. Has anyone experienced success cleaning these channels out other than removing the pony. Also I think I will have to sell the seat tank I bought from B4D2, it fits a 5U, and I would have to make to many changes in my cab shield protection on the 5J to have it work for me. Its in real nice condition.

Joe, you probably already know this but the diesel has to be turning to get water circulating through the pony. If one runs the pony for a while without the diesel turning the pony will get hot.

I'd try some cooling system flush first before doing anything else.

How long does it crank before it gets hot and how hot is hot??

Jim

This is really weird. The post shows the words pony pony together but when I go to edit the post, it shows as pony. 👽

Hi Joe Van,
Haven't heard from you in awhile.
You can do a reasonable job of cleaning the passages with the heads removed. Pretty common to find them packed solid with crud.

The one passage you can't do much about is the cross over passage on the bottom. It just doesn't line up so that you can get access.

I've had good success with a piece of cable chucked up in a drill motor and pressure washer but you may have to remove the pony to get at the cross passage.

At the back of the 5J engine block buried behind everything is a drain plug which is the lowest point in the passageway from the pony to the main. (behind the pony oil drain pipe, the lever that comes down for the valve actuators, so close to the clutch housing that it could NOT possibly be the correct plug) That passageway was blocked on mine solid with rust. I got some of the rust out though that hole with a wire poking in both directions. I ended up taking the pony off and cleaning it throughly. Small Cable in a Drill is a good idea with lots of water flowing to flush! If you are at the point of starting your main and the pony is in good shape, you could forgo taking it off and try cleaning through the drain hole after using a good flush solution. After I got mine running I used Citric Acid instead of a name brand Radiator Flush.

Old Magnet: I've been watching, My D2 is up north at my camp, no water to speak of, and a masterful job to take the pony off. I do have a portable pump/washer on my ATV I could use. I saw this post a while ago and thought I would have to take the heads off, (not to bad). I remember your pic post now of the routing problem. It's been about 20 years since I last had the pony off and cleaned things up.
I always turn over the main to make sure the H2O pump is circulating the coolant.
Nothing is easy! Now to find time to get up there and getter done!
THANKS GUYS, I do love this site and old iron!
