Hi Team,
went to The Dealer yesterday and got them to look up the above rope lengths by Part Number on their NPR.

From a 1966 Cat Technical Partsgram I have it says :- 1/4" polypropylene sash cord with a minimum Tensile Strength of 250 lbs.

My original D4 one here appears to be 1/4" braided cotton and is 6 feet long.

By the Cat Numerical Parts Record at The Dealer I was given the following lengths :-

D2 & D4 (3B3808 rope) is given as 2 Metres = approx. 6'6"

D6 (8B9724) is given as 3 Metres = approx. 10'

Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

Handy specs there, edb. Would be great info to archive here.

Those specs sparked my curiousity so I dug out the 3B3808 pony starter rope from my NOS D4 tool kit and compared it to that info. It was spot on, the rope measured 6' 5" from the base of the wooden handle to the knot on the end, and I suspect that if the knot was tightened up a bit more the extra inch difference would be easily had. Also to note, the wooden handle on the end is right on 4" long and has a slight taper toward each end. The rope looks and feels just like what my parents always called "clothesline rope" that I remember them buying in 100 foot coils and stringing up to dry clothes on outside. Could be the same stuff.

Toby, that definitely looks like the old sash cord used in double-hung windows back in the day when they had cast-iron weights. Now I know what to go get from the hardware store - thanks for posting and Ed for the info!

Hi Team,
seeing Sasquatch's starter rope with a normal land lubbers Overhand Knot that can slip at anytime with possible hurtful results.
I suggest using a Figure Of Eight Knot for Safety Reasons--less liable to slip.
Scan below shows how to tie a Figure Of Eight Knot.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

Thanks, Eddie-
I was just looking at the parts book & trying to guess the length of that rope for the D2...hard to tell from the pic...
I wonder if the handle is still available from Cat...rope is no problem at the hardware store.

Interesting: I have a Cat Parts catalogue for 3J tractors from 3J#1 to 5000, form 6700. On page 221, it lists the rope and handle as Part#3B3809.

Starter ropes are special, not clothesline or other cotton rope.

There is a special cord that does not stretch under load.

I find it at Farm supply Stores. (We use it on the small engines of our wheel lines.)
