Getting ready to put pistons back in and I would like to know what grit of a ball hone is best. Also, is the chassis manual the best to show what the rear sprockets are to be pushed on with ? I have a parts and engine manual.

Here is my opinion - I'm sure there are better ones -
The hone needed is the one that will give new rings a rough surface to seat on. For many years I have used a spring loaded 3 blade "stone" type hone on cylinders, automotive, motorcycles, hydraulic cylinders, etc.

This is all stuff in my home shop. All of it worked, rings always seat. They aren't too expensive and it has lasted years. It might sound strange, but with this type of hone I have used hot soapy water as lubricant. It keeps the stones from clogging up and cleans the cylinders. Keep the hone moving, don't stop once you start.....

This is just one of the entries i found by a google search for what grit for cylinder hone. Take your pick!

In my past endeavors, I have had trouble getting a "steep" enough crosshatch. This mainly results from the minimum speed of the electric drills I have been using to spin the hone being higher than my ability to repeatably move the hone up and down in the cylinder without going too far and the 3 wing flex hone stones popping out and getting chipped.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

I've used a Ball Hone just to scuff up a D2 liner. Its been so long ago I seem to remember it being somewhat successful? Rings seated, so it must have worked....

I did a little looking on the web also, and if you follow this link, http://www.enginehones.com/technical.html it gives a quick tutorial. SOooo what is recommended, a ball or a stone hone for a D2 with a shiny glaze on the cylinders?

if all your doing is trying to get rid of the glaze, the ball hone will work fine. you do need to make sure you move it in and out at the proper frequency compared to the speed of the drill to get the correct crosshatch angle.

Without going back through the Files, I believe CAT recommended 15 tons but it has been down graded to 10 tons? There is a Spec sheet on a Thread around here somewhere!

What about acid etching or are aftermarket liners not hardened?
