Hi, Case on a Cat.
Here are some photos of what I understand was the first 'mish-mash' to come of the from the new company, around 3 years after the merge. It is currently owned and has been beautifully restored by the Veerkamp family of Placerville, CA..

Is that 'mishy' or 'mashy' enough for you - - or the two hafta be together? LOL.
Just my warped sense of humor.![]()
That looks well beyond mishmash.
Carl,
Rather than have a long discussion here for your very good question, why not wait and bring it up with the exhibitors at the SM show. We can walk around and actually TOUCH parts and pieces, and check out how the various models came out, when they came out and so forth. There will be enough of them there covering the periods before WWI and the following decade, that you will be able to get a through understanding of the origins of CAT and the contributions of the two founders, Best and Holt. This will be a rare chance to do that. There will be some outstanding samples of early pre-CAT history right there at the show! Come and learn!
And that goes for everyone else who have similar questions like Carl. History will be on display in a big way!!

Hi, Folks.
Jan's right - at least THIS time. There WILL be LOTZA Cat, Best and Holt history at the Santa Margarita Best Of The West Show. You will be able to wander around at your leisure, take photos, ask 'kwestyuns' - - - - - - - - - Who knows, you may even be lucky enough to get some answers that are at least 1/2-way right.
Maybe we can set Old Magnet up in a big shady tent with his favorite drink on tap, a comfy chair and desk and ALL his reference books and material at hand as the Chief Information Officer. Might hafta get Garlic Pete and Garlic mom to do a special run up to Corralitos with the Pete and Cozad to bring all the reference stuff down - and then another to carry it all back again. Just joking, O.M..
Just my 0.02.
Aww man... I have to wait.
Good point though Jan. That will be pretty cool. What a quick and thorough introduction to Caterpillars. This is good timing for me only by chance.
I am defenetly looking for an opportunity to see a lot of D2's, to better understand what every little detail looked like from the factory and see the clever adaptations made by owners since.

Case on a Cat,
Did you know that Clark Gable once owned a D2 (or an R2? Can't remember which). Well, unless I miss my guess, you'll be able to have your picture taken standing next to it!
By the way, Don't get too stressed out from Glen's message. When you get to the D8 size "needing an addiction fix", I'll gladly let you try out my 14A so you can avoid any entanglements with one that size!

Jan
7C Fifteen. It will be at the show dressed in its original Bishop citrus fenders

Well, I can't think of a better place to see everything, from the early Holts, to the early Bests, to the late models of each molded into new colors sporting a new name. Caterpillar was built on all the best that both companies had to offer, and was dead set on becoming a worldwide entity back when most people had a hard time getting across the United States. Vision, dedication, perseverance, and changes in engineering and metallurgy have brought Caterpillar from where it began to where it is now. The most amazing thing is you will truly see the extreme of both ends of the spectrum at this show!
