Hello,
Have no original manual for 1924 Holt...HOPING the 1928 Caterpillar manual I've purchased will suffice...want to make sure I don't use any modern products that may cause damage, but have no idea what/where to get the modern equivalents of what it needs...

Per the "1928 2-Ton "Caterpillar" Tractor Operator's Instruction Book", it recommends...

"HEAVY OIL", "CRANKCASE OIL", "CUP GREASE", & "LIGHT CRANKCASE OIL" for the magneto.

For the magneto, I thought a 3in1/ light household or sewing machine oil would suffice- (please correct if I'm wrong?)

For the "HEAVY OIL", "CRANKCASE OIL", & "CUP GREASE" - can anyone tell me what the modern equivalents are, and where I can purchase them? Thanks!

Hello and welcome.

There will probably be many different answers but I’ll give it a shot.

Light engine oil would probably be equivalent to a 10-30 or so. For a magneto, I’m sure 3 in 1 oil is fine.

Crankcase oil would be like a straight 30wt or 40wt. Personally I use Delo 100 40wt in my 60.

Heavy oil would likely be a 80-90 gear oil for the transmission and final drives.

For cup grease I’ve always used whatever #2 grease is in my grease gun.

One thing to remember is that our modern oils are quite a bit better than what they had in the late twenties so it’s hard to go to far wrong.

A good friend of mine ran tractor hydraulic fluid in the steering clutches of his Two Ton. He said that made it steer much better. When I get mine going, that’s what I’ll be running in the steering.

Enjoy and have fun with your tractor.

remember that some of the gear oils that have EP additives will degrade copper and bronze.

I'll look for those without or w/ the least EP additives... (but I'm guessing there's a lot of modern added detergents, etc in everything?). I'm a total rookie- inherited Holt from my dad- can't tell what he used on it & want to take care of it! Thanks!

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
