I have an old 4 cyl engine that was used on a sawmill. One of the sidecovers has Holt cast in it and the exhaust manifold has the old wavy caterpillar name cast in it.On the rear of the engine is a brass tag with 75 on top and below it is made by Midwest Engine Company,Indianapolis Indiana ser no 27287.There is more on there but can't quite read it.Is missing a cylinder head but otherwise complete.Measured the bore and appears to be 6 1/2 inches.would like to know how old this is and what model tractor this was used in.It looks similar to the engine I saw in a 10 Ton but the 10 Ton had valve covers and this one dos'nt and this one looks a little cruder.Any information would be much appreciated and an estimate of what it might be worth as I am considering selling it. Thanks

I've got some serial info that says numbers 26501-27500 assigned to T-16 engines built by Midwest Engine Co., Indianapolis, Indiana. "T-16" was the 10-Ton. There is no date associated with that information, but the document is from 1922, so it is before that. It is highly likely it was during WWI when production of tractors and components was farmed out by Holt to meet demand. This document doesn't give a cross reference between engine, transmission and tractor serial numbers, so I can't say what tractor S/N your engine was originally installed in, if any.

Thanks for the information.Do you know if Midwest was owned by Holt or if not did they build their own line of engines or for other tractor companies? Thanks

I have an engine like that that reads Holt 55-75 Engine (tag says) built Lyons Atlas Div.Midwest Engine co,Indianapolis,In
Atlas engine built gas engines and steam engined (some portable ?) The last of the old plant has been torn down recently.the old adress was 19th and Columbia ave. and some time later Martindale ave (now Andrew J Brown Ave) Major Tool Now occupies most of the ground by the Atlas property.;Gene

P.S. the rocker arm were open on early models , later one had covers

Gene:

Do you know the changeover date from open to covered. I always thought that it was 22 (not sure) I know your 1919 is open and my 1924 is covered, but not sure of the change date

Hope all is well with you, Dan (will not see you until Aug at the show)
