Please excuse me. As a new member I got overwhelmed is the search feature. I am currently completing rebuild of a Holt 75 engine. I am down to setting the magneto timing and cannot find much information on the firing order and which cylinder is considered the #1.
I would like to confirm the the firing order is 1243 and that the #1 cylinder is on the clutch end of the engine. Thank you Matt

Hello Aurora and welcome. Looks like we’re neighbors, well sort of lol. I’ve just got done with a Holt 45 combine engine. It’s a little brother to your big 75. I’ve attached some information from a old Holt School Bulletin. I think you’ll find it useful.

To answer your questions, the firing order is 1-2-4-3. Number one is next to the fly wheel.

We like pictures!!!!

Good luck with your project.

Hello Josh, Bruce and the group.

Thank you for the information. It confirms what I was thinking.
Bruce, I am near Lynden. The engine is not mine, when completed it will be installed back into the crawler and shown locally. As for pictures I will see what I can do.
Again Thank you for your very timely response.
Matt

If I am reading and understanding the two sources, one says #1 is toward radiator and the other says toward operator on the tractor. However it makes no difference to timing the engine since the 1-2-4-3 sequence can be referenced from either end without changing the firing order.......for example if you change 1 to 4 2 to 3 3 to 2 and 4 to 1
124312431243 becomes 43-1243124312 ...as you can see the sequence is the same.

Any numbering on the magneto terminals probably should be observed to avoid potential for confusion later.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

I see what you mean ccjersey, that is rather confusing.

It certainly is confusing, I looked at another Holt 75 book dated a year earlier, and it has the same information as the book that Bruce posted.

It's interesting to look at the number of different firing orders that a 3 cyl can have.:biggrin1:
