Hello all, here are some pictures of a Holt engine I brought home today. I've known about this engine for many years. Until this winter I've never been able to talk the fellow out out of it. This winter after one of our many blizzards, he got his D5B spun off a road bank and stuck in a pretty bad way. He asked me to bring my D6C down to yard him out. When we got it out, he wanted to pay me. I said "how about we trade for that Holt". He agreed, so today I went after it.

First, I took measurements and made a couple stands for it to sit on. Then I bolted them to the engine and dug it out so I could stand it up. Once I stood it up I was able to slide it in to the tractor bucket and tote it home. It was only a couple miles from home so I just drove the tractor with the Holt in the bucket to my shop. I gave it a rince to get the dirt off.

There are no manifolds, and it's got a broken rocker arm. Perhaps it's a lost cause but I'm gonna give it a tech school try (I'd give it a college try but I only went to tech school).

Tomorrow the oldest girls and I are headed to the remains of a Holt Oregon special combine where there is most of a engine. The owner told me to get whatever I need off of it. So we're taking the metal detector and having a treasure hunt. This engine has been taken apart and it's scattered all over the hillside. Hopefully we'll find something useful.

Enjoy

Bruce P

Hi Mog, the engine we're looking at today was taken apart by a couple little kids about 50 years ago. Apparently they were bugging their dad and he sent them away with a cresant wrench and a hammer. They really did a number on it, parts scattered every which way. I've looked it over several years ago and found the manifolds they were perfect hopefully they still are, and hopefully they will fit my engine.

Should be a good time today with the kiddos. Pictures will follow.

Well, the three oldest girls, 11,7, .and 3 my mother in law and my mother went for a treasure hunt in the rain today. We got soaked but we had a good day of treasure hunting.

Main find were the manifolds both were there and perfect. Best of all, they fit!!!! Found three jugs, three pistons, three rods. Don't know where the forth one is. Since the heads are still on the jugs and the pistons are out, I can only assume that the pistons were not stuck when the kids took it apart.

Found all four crank case covers. Funny thing, none of them said Holt. Found most of the clutch, and the flywheel, with three spokes broken. Also found the fan and gear cover. Gas tank was there with the cool fill funnel it's in good shape just a couple bullet holes. Water tank was still on the rear of the machine, I got the fill funnel off of it.

Didn't find anything brass, no carb, mag, oil distributor, water manifold, or either engine tag.

All and all it was a great day!

Here's some pictures

Here is a picture of a couple of the bolts the held the engine to the wooden beams. Big deal right, look closer. The funny lines in the bolt shanks have been worn into them by the different grains in the wood beams. No doubt the vibration and weight of the engine had a lot to do with it.

Thanks, even a blind squirrel finds a nut occasionally. LOL !

Next I'll get the heads off my complete engine and access the situation. Fingers crossed.

Good afternoon all, today I decided to bring the Holt in the shop and see what I could find out. At first I figured I'd just get the heads off. Well one thing led to another and I pretty much got the whole thing apart. I can't believe how easy the bolts and nuts came apart most would unscrew with fingers once you got them broke loose. 3 of 4 cylinders don't look too bad, it's unfortunate the spark plugs got left out all those years. Heads are so so, but I think they'll be ok. I don't see any freeze damage.

Lifters are all free but one, oil pump turns free, cam, and crank turn fantastically. Rod journals look great, so do the cam lobes.

So now I'll start soaking the cylinders. What's everyone's favorite soaking solution. I've heard everything from water, to diesel, to acetone/tranny fluid, to molasses. I'm all ears. I'm well aware patience is the main thing.

Mog, some days I feel older than others!! Lol.

Here's some pictures from today.
