Condolences to the family.
I am a little shocked to hear that.....seems he was on the mend.
Rest in peace my friend....
I'm thankful that I had the privaledge of meeting Herb at one of the Ponte play days. I remember push loading him with the mighty D4 while he was on another D4 pulling a scraper. He was so good with the dirt he never looked back. He would just face forward and make a nice smooth cut until the pan was full. Lift it up and away he went.
Rest in Peace!
I never met him but I sure wish I could have, condolences to his family and his CAT family friends as well.
everyone who knows and works/plays with these old cat skinners treasure your time with them life is short
Rest in piece brother!

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.
Hi, Folks.
Thanks to Glen Ghilotti, I had the privelege of meeting Herb and spending an hour or two with him on my 2010 trip across the pond. I had given Glen my complete collection of old photos, videos, history and data about vintage machinery. Glen had loaded it all onto his laptop which he took along when he took me out to meet Herb.
After we had been chatting for a while, including hearing the story of 'Burbank Petroleum', Glen opened up his laptop and went into a slide show program that he had set up with all my photos. You could see Herb's smile getting brighter and brighter with each new photo as he watched the slide show. Glen left the laptop with Herb after he had shown Herb how to turn it on and off and start up the slide show. Herb was happier than a kitten with a longer piece of string.
Thank you, Glen, both for taking me out to meet Herb and for putting all those photos together in that slide show for Herb. I can still remember the glow on Herb's face that day.
Herb, may you rest in peace with re-runs of all the great dreams and experiences you ever had about Cats and machinery. I offer my condolences to his family and friends. Treasure those memories of a real Caterpillar lover and an all-round good bloke.
I met Herb, at Tractor Don's one wet a rainy day, during one of his Bar-B-Que's a few years back, and listened, as he held everyone's intrest while telling tales of old, operating Cat's.
We lost a great one, sleep well my friend.
Met Herb a few years back at his playday. One fine gentleman. People like Herb are what made this country great. They are few and far between nowdays. May he rest in peace and sincere regards to his family.
Hey Gang,
As some of you know I am down in the Tulare area dealing with Chapter 5 business of which I will report on another thread. Herb was released from the hospital on Saturday afternoon. I spent an hour or so with him on Saturday morning. He was doing great. The health problems (heart failure, and kidneys) were all looking good. He was sent to a physical therapy center, so he could get excercise for a week before going home. Denise, Herb's niece called me last night to tell me what a great day Herb had in physical therapy. He got up, dressed, went to a therapy work out, spent the day with Denise, smiling, laughing, and was having a great day. I got a call around 8:00 am this morning with the shocking news from Denise that Herb passed away in his sleep. God didn't want him to go in the hospital, wanted him to have a great day with his niece before going.
OK gang, heres the deal. Chapter 5 board voted to have a scholarship fund and this Saturday at the general membership meeting we are going to appoint a committee to get 'er done. I called Denise tonight, and told her that we are going to name the scholarship after Herb. I don't think any of the board will argue with this, and if they do, we will have to deal with it, but I think it would be so cool to do an annual scholarship in memory of Herb. So, if you members agree, bring a donation on Saturday and let's make this thing happen.-glen
