Hello everyone, this is my first post here as I recently bought a 951A Traxcavator and know absolutely nothing about it.

So I'm writing to you for help on maintenance of this machine. I would like to know what model year is this, what kind of engine does it have, what should be the valve clearance, etc. Just anything that can help me keep it running. The numbers that I read from the plates are as follows:

MADE IN GT. BRITAIN
TRAXCAVATOR REG'D 951A
S/N 63K650
CRAWLER TYPE
CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO., LTD., 8A2451E

and below on the engine block a number is engraved:

687E

And there are some numbers on the injection pump:

785046E
E1
68AF or 58AF
V - 8 (?)

The motor is a 4-cylinder diesel and that's basically all I know.

Thank you in advance for any replies.

Engine is a D330c 4-3/4" bore x 6" stroke.
Year of build is 1969. Only built 1968 to 1970 with a total of 987 units.
Valve lash is Intake 0.015" and Exhaust 0.025" with engine cold.

Need to get youself a set of manuals and parts book and study up.

You can get a parts book but a service manual was never produced, the nearest you will get is the D4D service manual for the engine, back-end and final drives, there was a spec sheet only for the hydraulic system, the closest manual for that section is the old 955F 45A or the 955 60A. The engine serial number is the same as the rest of the machine. They were quite a good machine, the final drives do not like too much abuse although the 63K and later 89A had heavier sprocket shafts and bearings than the first 951 machines.

Catsilver, I thought the 89A series tractor had the 4"1/2 inch bore motor and was produced before the 63K, the next model after the 63K was the 951B with the same basic engine as the 63K but with the Power Shift Trans' and the chance of peddle steer???.

Looks right to me tc,
Also add direct electric start to the power shift and peddle steer.

Thanks for the replies. I am located in Poland and as far as I'm concerned this is the only 951A here in the whole country and unfortunately I don't have any access to parts or manuals. The official CAT service in Poland told me that they don't think this model even exists. Where can I get these service manuals for the engine and the Traxcavator itself?

Could you tell me please what's the horsepower on this model? Where can I get some parts and what other models are similar and parts could be interchangable? What kind of batteries should I use?

Thanks again.

I think the closest info you will find is for the 951B 86Jxxxx low s/n machines built in the USA. ebay is probably your best choice for manuals although Cat should be able to provide and there are aftermarket print versions.
Horsepower is listed at 85.

Do some internet searching for parts, way to many sources to list besides Caterpillar. Can help with specific items. Looks like you will face significant shipping charges.

Be aware that yours is listed as direct drive and the 86J is powershift.

Thanks. I thought that maybe there were some online PDF service manuals like in cars but I guess I'm gonna have to look for a physical one. And what is the difference between direct drive and powershift? Is it that the steering of the main clutch is by a big lever in my cat and the powershift has a small one?

Direct drive is a manual shift transmission and clutch.
Powershift is equivalent to automatic transmission.

Hi TC,
The 89A did have the 4.5" bore engine the same as the D4D 88A series, the 63K had the 4.75" bore the same as the later D4D 60J? series machine, the 951B was introduced before the 951A finished production and was a different animal with power shift, wet back end, pedal steer option and a totally different loader frame and arms, but you probably know all that and have fixed more of them than I did when I was spanner bending back in the '70's. The main part not in the D4D book is the hydraulic system, and this changed a lot with the 951B and the only way to find a service manual with a similar system is o go to the 955H 60A book, specs may be different but the layout is the same.
The only part that really changed in the 89A/63K, 88A/60J was the engine, and any D4D manual will cover the clutch, back end and final drives in all four ranges.

Thanks for the information.

I don't really need a service manual for the hydraulics I think I can handle them pretty well. The most important thing is the engine, transmission and drive gear (track tension etc.) and that's what I'll need the manual for. I didn't even know there were automatics in these and the CAT service hasn't responded yet.

Thanks again.

I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
