Managed to pick up this D4 7U for the equivalent of 372 US Dollars.
I got it started once about 3 weeks ago when I got the pony motor running long enough to start the main engine with full fuel pressure indicated.

Battled most of today cranking the main motor over, but no start.
Exhaust puffing light grey smoke.

I have seen posts where it was mentioned to clean a filter at the pump, and also between the fuel pump and the injector pump. Took some covers off, but cannot find the mentioned filters.

Any help would be appreciated to solve the fuel pressure / starting problem.

the main fuel filters are in the vertical housing right next to the fuel pressure gage. their is a bleeder valve facing outward on the side and another one with a knurled knob facing forward
the transfer pump has a filter screen and check valve on the bottom where the main fuel line comes in, and usually catches a lot of crud from the fuel tank
is your fuel pressure gauge reading pressure when you have the pony spinning the diesel?

Picture #8 shows the fuel filter housing. The top is held on by 4 nuts. Under the cap is a filter plate that has filters suspended from it on square plastic rods. These are delicate. Quite easy to break the end off one during the process of removing the pin and keeper from the top or to snap the round bottom off that blocks the lower end of the filter. When putting the cap and filter plate back make sure the hole through those parts lines up with the hole in the filter housing or you will block fuel flow.

I really wonder if you don't have some other problem though. Is decompression lever in? Engine warmed ? Throttle pulled hard to make sure it opens?

GP,
That's part of the correct fill pipe that is used when you have the hood mounted surge tank.

Is the compression release "released"? It'll smoke like that if the decompressor is on.

unusual starter you have there, is it turning the right direction?

Check if you are getting good fuel flow where the garden hose goes into the pump. The fuel could have dissolved the hose and caused some type of fuel flow restriction.

Thanks for all the replies.
This dozer has been standing outside for the last 18 years and was covered with sails, last started in 2007 by the previous owner.
I have bled the system until fuel flows out of the bleeder at the top of the filter tower, and also cracked off the injector pipes until diesel started to pump out then tightened them again while cranking.

The dozer has a surge tank on top of the hood, and four hydraulic lines running to the rear.

When started 3 weeks ago it was using the pony motor, which is not running well. I have installed the quad bike motor in a desperate attempt to get the dozer started again so that I can drive it about 1km to my farm from where it is now.

Starting direction is correct. Puffing a small amount of whitish grey smoke once decompressor is placed in the run position with throttle opened.

I cranked this machine for about and hour with the quad bike motor yesterday with the decompressor on and off, maybe not enough heat generated to get it warm enough to start. I have the pony spinning about the speed it was turning when I got the main engine started 3 weeks ago. Any faster and it disengages the pinion.

The fuel pressure 3 weeks ago went to the green while spinning with the pony motor and started as soon as I opened the throttle.

Yesterday while cranking with the quad bike motor turning in the correct direction the fuel pressure guage did not move at all.

The quad bike motor is only a temporary starting solution. I will try to sort the pony motor out once I get the machine home.

The garden hose fuel line is also just a temporary replacement, as the original fuel line was rock hard and leaking diesel badly. Small town nearest where I live does not have 12mm fuel line. Nearest town to buy is 180km away, so will get new fuel line when I go there.

Does anyone have images of the fuel system they can post showing from where the fuel line connects below the hour meter through to the injector pump showing where the relief valves are and any sieves that may need cleaning.

I did try and open the filter tower yesterday by taking out the four bolts on the top, but the top would not come off. tried tapping it up with a small hammer and it lifted about 1mm but something still seems to be holding it. Didn't want to damage anything, so just tightened it back down.

How much fuel is spraying out when you open up a injector line? how long did you have the main engine running?
I had a similer deal one winter I fired up the pup motor on my 8u then went and had a couple cups of coffee. after my coffee break I shut the compresion release and the main motor fired right up ran for a few minutes and quit. after a little head scratching I found I had had water in the fuel and it had froze in the fuel pump and broke the shaft to the drive gear.

So follow your fuel line it connects to the fuel pump there soould be a drain on the bottom of the fuel filter housing open it and see what comes out catch it in a can and check for water if you find a lot of water pull fuel pump it may have rusted and sized.

No freezing problems where I am in South Africa, temps yesterday when trying to start were about 23 degrees celcius😖mile:

I will look for the drain you mention, but don't recall seeing one.
If I pull the fuel line off before it goes into the housing on the motor I do have a full flow of fuel.

There is a nut that I removed that faces downwards below the housing sort of on a tubular section just after where the fuel line connects that I removed, but nothing came out there.

There are no photo's but a discussion on fuel pump.
