Hey all, long time no see...
My ol' 977 H broke the recoil spring on the right side in 3 places, so I spent the last couple weeks cutting the spring, separating the track, pulling and blowing out out the broken stop plate bolts and dowels, and generally preparing to install the newly re-sprung assembly once I get it back. Until I get a call from the shop. The recoil bolt part# 5H9460 and nut 5H9459 are no longer available from Cat, and mine probably aren't safe to re-use. Been frantically searching the web, can't find the parts aftermarket. all I can come up with is 3P2198, and my Cat dealer says it doesn't cross.

Help! Somebody out there must have faced this problem! The shop with the parts won't machine me a new one because of liability issues. Anybody have a line on one that will, or maybe have a better idea?

Thanks.

Try those cat numbers on Machinery Trader Parts ,and see what you come up with .
I have a D-6 74A ,and got an aftermarket recoil spring ,bolt and nut from an oufit on Ebay located in Florda .
Iwould have to check the part number ,but Iam thinking that 977H and D-6 c's used basically the same undercarriage.

The 977H (53A) uses the D7 undercarriage.
The 5H9460 bolt is the same as used on D7-17A 7409-up.
The 5H9459 nut is also used on the 7409-up 17A plus the earlier 977 20A-2509-up.

I don't have a 53A parts book but the matching 17A7409-up outer spring is still a good available number 5H9474 used on D7 and D8.

The inner spring match is a 5H9475 replaced by a 5S3339

Do a net search for the springs, both or available aftermarket.

Hope that helps.

Wow ,I checked with the local Cat dealer on the 5h9474 outer spring and innerspring used in the D-7 17 A7409 & up .Seens like the same 5H9460 bolt and 5H9459 nut was used in that D-7 also ,and not available .
Whats the answer to this problem other than buying a used spring assembly out of a parts tractor complete ?

Springs are still available aftermarket.
Kind of stuck on the adjuster bolt. This is the one used with hydraulic track adjusters on 5 and 7 roller frame. If you can't find new/aftermarket there's not much choice but to go used or get one made.

Only other option I can think of is to drop back to the earlier non-hydraulic adjuster units with the 8F6218 bolt and go to aftermarket hydraulic adjuster with an extension for the 7-roller. Also takes a different inner spring 6B7110. Used on s/n's 17A6401 to 7408. Don't know if any of these part numbers are available new either.

Tried to find a used assembly at the start. No go from the local yards or Cat smartparts. The spring was easy. Regal had it in stock. It's this bolt and nut that's kicking my butt. I'll try CES.
If anyone has the engineering specs for the part, I'd appreciate them. Maybe those could help me convince a machine shop to help me outta this.

If you can come up with a helpful contact at your local Cat dealer drawings and specs are available for parts out of production.

Grade 8 threaded rod, 2 nuts and some loc-tite? Maybe there's more to it than that?

OK searched online and found your thread on HEForum. There's a picture there.......Is the bolt made into the hydraulic adjuster cylinder?

There's a nut listed here

D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄
