I am going to ask for pictures because there were several different versions used and the early ones could have been replace by the later ones.
Thanks

There is a parts book for the 30 in the ACMOC library. Here are some pics from that book. Unfortunately, the entire P/N is hard to read. There is enough legible in these two pictures to see that the valve spring retainer is the same for the S/Ns listed.
Ken is correct about needing the S/N. I hope this helps to some extent.

S/N might not do you any good at all.
Thirty's were very common machines, many have been overhauled, parts scavenged from other machines, built of several machines, etc.
It is not at all uncommon to find this situation.
Good Luck, you should be able to come up with the "hardware" necessary to complete the task.

I worked for a dealer in the early 70's, chased valve springs, valves, retainers, rings, pistons through multiple piles of microfiche and parts books, always ending up with the "orphaned" Caterpillar Part #s - NO LONGER AVAILABLE!

I remember a few years ago one of our nice members over in South Carolina, Stephen Sarkany, got busy and made himself new valves for his Cat 30 tractor using D8 valves which can be bought fairly cheaply, there was some machining of the valve stem involved, including shortening them and creating new collet grooves, but they came up great, he posted pictures and the story on here, so a search of his posts might find it.

I just tried to find Stephen Sarkany in our members list but was unsuccessful, that was a challenge in itself as the members names are not in a alphabetical order, so I'm not sure how you go about finding his old thread on this topic, I did a quick look using the search function but that didn't work.

You could try searching for the username “STEPHEN”.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
