From what I gather the Holts at one time used a 4 cylinder Hall Scott motor, that motor and the 6 cylinder used in power plants and trucks are brothers, the 6 version is a model 75, I don't know what model the 4 cyln is, and I'm looking for a book on them if anyone could steer me in the right direction, the 6 may have been built as early as 1922 thru 27/28.
Thanks
Take a look at: http://hallscottengines.com/Page_2.html for a brief history of the Hall-Scott Engine Co. Ray
Thanks, I've been at Spikes place looking for info on this hs 75 thats why I turned here to see if anyone had one or knew of any as thye are the same as the 75 I need to work on.
Hi Aaron,
sometime back I found the scanned below article on the Fageol Safety Coach--Hall Scott engines-- in my Dykes Automobile and Gasoline Engine Encyclopedia.
It tells of the 4 and 6 cyl coach engines.
However the 2 Ton engines are 4" bore as against the 4 1/4" bore of the Coach engines. All the engines are 5 1/2" stroke.
The coach engines have a lot of Aluminium castings, the 2 Ton is all Cast Iron.
The article shows the timing chain set up but, mentions later units having the gear train as per the 2 Ton.
At one time I also found an article on the restoration of a Fageol Safety Coach at a Transport, Coach Museum there in the States but have not been able to locate it of late.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Eddie B.![]()
I recently finished reading a complete history of Hall-Scott but it belongs to my brother and I had to give it back. The name of it was something like HALL-SCOTT--A HISTORY OF A GREAT ENGINE BUILDER or something close to that. Go to Amazon.com books you could probably turn it up. It was written from information provided by an engineer that was with Hall-Scott for years and included a lot of very good photos.
They built a lot of great engines and probably could have survived, at least for a while, if they hadn't been plundered by the parent corporation of all they had earned supplying engines for the allies during WWII. And yes, the Holt two-ton had a 4 cylinder OHC engine from H-S.
