use 00 grade grease, the grease fittings are button head
and never over pressure them--use a volume type grease can(allemite or equal) or a pressure relief valve on a standard grease gun
Hi Russcpa.
Welcome and thanks for joining ACMOC. Its great that you had an interest and got your wife's grandfathers 9U. There are a great machine and will do a lot for a long time with decent care. Of course we all want to see pictures. It may require you to have three posts before you can post pictures. If you edit your profile there is a place to put in your location. Chances are that there are members in your area close enough to explain things and a good chance there is a chapter nearby also.

if her grandfather bought it brawnd new you should see if they have all the original tools and the original grease can for it.
Her grandfather bought it new in 54. Sold it sometime in the 60s. Next owner sold it to my wife's mother''s cousin's husband in the early eighties. He died at age 92 in May. The D6 has spent it's entire life in Southern Il until now. I will make a trip back to Burnt Prairie and see if they still have the grease can. I bet they do. My friend who is the Cat person has been farming while I have been getting the dozer to my house. Not sure about the tools? They did give me all the books.
I will get pictures posted. I have pictures of her grandfather in the forties doing excavation work to set the oil derrick. Looks like a 30s International truck pulling the trailer. Thanks Again.

If you have the parts manual for your machine the complete tool set is shown in the back of the book, a small illustration of the grease can (volume pump) will also be there.
Having the real grease pump will make things easier than trying do it with a more modern grease gun.
As for the pony fuel shut off it is your choice,if you want to remain original that is fine. Many parts you get are made in China even some coming in nice yellow boxes saying Cat Genuine Parts.I have had poor luck with shutoff valves for all manor of things, very hard to find any that are not China made. But I do have brass 1/4 turn 1/4 in pipe valve that is 3 years old on a D6 that only leaks when the nut in charge doesn't turn it off. The in line filer is also easier than the sediment bowl arrangement IMO .
Always fun to get something with family history.Hope it dos not give you to many curves in getting back to being usable.
