There will be a little plate riveted to the back of the tractor, look from behind, up underneath the seat. The number will probably begin with "4U..." or "5U..."

Sad story about the starter motor.

That's a good looking machine, I really like the "tree knocker". I hope the repairs to the starter go smoothly. When you think about it that starter motor was a cheap sacrifice to keep that guy from operating the machine, there's no telling the amount of damage that was avoided!
Thanks for the pictures.

I'm guessing a couple of hundred clams to rewind the starter motor, depending which set of windings are burnt.

According to my book 5u1837 is 1948. 5u667 to 2199 built that year
Good luck. Al 👍

Go on e-bay and look for parts and maintenance manuals--eventually get a repair/service manual
we are hoping that a serial # list will be added to the technical library someday!

Starter removal is simple.............but it may not be easy😈

First disconnect the battery cable that runs from the pushbutton switch. On top of the starter mount is a large 15/16"?? bolt with a lock nut. Loosen the locknut and take the bolt out. Spray in the hole and in the joint between starter and the cast iron ring it mounts in liberally with penetrating oil and tap, wiggle and gently pry the starter out of it's mount. Sometimes they can be stubborn. Might have to put some heat on the mounting to expand it a little and loosen the rust. The two 3/8 bolts on the opposite side of the mounting ring do not hold the starter in the mount. If you cannot get it out any other way, you can remove them and work the pulley assembly out of the mounting and maybe get enough room to tap directly on the starter nose........but gently!

Do you have a shop nearby to take it to?
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

It took me a lot to get mine out without damaging anything. After I removed that 15/16 set bolt, I heated the housing gently a couple of times and hit everything with Kroil (use the penetrating oil of your choice). Then I hit it a bit harder with the heat and started tapping gently on the nose cone of the starter. Once it moved just a little, I was able to wiggle and jiggle and got it out. I then sanded both surfaces liberally, and then coated them with copper no-seize. It's golden now…

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
