Getting ready to pull the d311 out of my d2. Last two things on the list, pull the water pump and see why it's spraying fluid all over from beneath the pulley and disconnect the fuel line. I pumped about five pumps of regular grease into the water pump, then it started leaking profusely. Does it take a special type of grease?
Anything else I should be concerned with? There's only four bolts left in the bell housing holding it together, the front transverse spring is out, we'll try not to drop it on our toes...

I think your water pump should have a standard grease fitting on the side and a grease purge fitting above it. Sometimes the purge will have been replaced with a grease fitting and presure will build up in the bearing chamber and damage the grease seals. Over greasing should result in grease purging out the weep hole in the water pump or coming out behind the pulley. I cannot think how it would affect the water seal in any way unless the weep hole is plugged.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄
