Hey guys this last Saturday while we had one last good weekend before it got cold I winterized my trucks and my equipment. My pony on my Cat 12 I pulled the carburetor off and cleaned it and my fuel tank and installed new fuel hose, in line fuel shut off valve, and an inline fuel filter. I was wondering if it hurts the carburetor at all if I just leave my fuel tank and carburetor empty on gas all winter so in the spring i don't have to deal with water issues and bad gas. I did reinstall everything back on the grader once it was all cleaned up so if need be I can put gas in it. Thanks in advance and sorry for the dumb question just didn't know if moisture or anything would hurt it while it sat all winter empty.

There may be other opinions but I let my ponies run out of fuel after the main starts by shutting off the fuel and letting the pony run out of fuel and die. That way there is no chance for fuel to leak into the pony crankcase and cause you more problems. Been doing it that way for as long as I remember. Smart move to put an inline strainer in the fuel line too.

PS: I also add Sta-Bil to the gas to prevent deterioration when used infrequently.

Drain it! Leave everything dry and it will fire right up come spring. Let’s say your tank shut off valve has a slow leak. Come spring you’ll be rebuilding your carb again.

A friend of mine emailed me to point out that he found that using non ethanol fuel solved his fuel problems and I agree as I have used regular gasoline (non ethanol) gas for years in the ponies on the D4 and 112. In fact I have not touched the pony carbs on either the D4 or the 112 for at least 15 years. For good measure I also add some Lead substitute to the fuel. Non ethanol fuel, inline strainer, run carb out of fuel after each start, add StaBil and PB substitute for good measure and your fuel problems will go away.

If you have an airport fairly close, buy some 100 octane low lead aviation gas. It comes with stabilizer in it. No more carb issues etc. I even use it in all my chain saws, weed eaters and blowers. I haven't had any issues with them either. They are all zippy with the extra octane.

I know its been said to leave the tank dry, but I fill mine to the top to prevent moisture build up and rust.
I changed the petcock/valve so I know it doesn't leak.

I had to google pony. LoL.
On motorbike and snowmobile i empty the carb and spray fogging oil inside the best i can. For gas tank, full and add stabilizer. If you can get real gas, no ethonol, all the better.
