I was looking at a generator that has the D4 engine as a power unit. The guy doesn't know what model or kw it is and I was wondering if anyone might know. I want to use it for a backup for my house. It's a 50s engine with a pony start. He wants 3,800 for it. Is it worth it? http://images.craigslist.org/01111_6teTKV9n5H8_600x450.jpg

Thanks, Randy

It's a clean looking unit. Certainly looks like it has been inside its whole life. How many hours. Price seems on the upper end but if it needs nothing, maybe not. What's it worth when you need it. To be legal you will still need a transfer switch and all the required safety stuff to insure you don't put power back into the utility when they are working on fixing the outage. That can easily cost more than the generator.

A close-up of the tag on the generator should tell the specs on it. I would guess about 20-25 kW. You need to know what voltage(s) the generator will do. 3 phase or single phase etc.

A manual transfer switch can be had for several hundred bucks from places like Harbor freight on one of their sales.

I really think the price is too high. You could get something a lot newer for a lot less. The other thing is how much load you will be able to apply to it. An old CAT is most likely going to be prone to slobbering unless you can load it up pretty good every now and then throughout the day.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Not Cat but I installed a 14KW natural gas Generac unit on my house a couple of years ago. $1400 for the unit from eBay and another 1000 for the installation and automatic transfer switch

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
