I'm sure this has been discussed before but what are some thoughts on gasoline for older Cat engines. I use non-oxygenated (no alcohol) fuel in my gasoline main and starting engines. I can get 87 and 91 octane gasoline with no alcohol (at least that's what it says on the pump) here locally. If the 87 and 91 octane are both truly "no alcohol", I wonder if one would be better than the other. The old low compression ratio engines would certainly run OK on 87 or lower octane fuel but I wonder if 87 or 91 octane would make for easier starting because of burn rate and evaporation properties. Appreciate any thoughts. Thanks

i would be more concerned with the lack of lead in the gasoline and the affect on the valve seats. of course no alcohol unless the rubber and plastic is ok with the solvent.

D46U straight blade,D46U cat angle blade,allis chalmers AD4 grader and Khoering 404 dragline. D4C 40A,D4 2T and scraper.

If it a machine that is used little, the few gallons that is used a year it is a good choice. Its a lot cheaper to buy 10 gallons of AV gas than clean carbs and fight the crap gas if it sets for a couple years.

I agree with the aviation gas. It is 100 octane low lead and has the stabilizer already in it. It will stay fresh for a long time.

Used to use 110LL in my lawn mower (after siphoning it out of Dad's 300). That 4.5hp Briggs would eat standing bamboo.... (some poetic license used in the telling of this tale...)

Back in the twenties and thirties I think they ran whatever they had. These low compression engines were able to run on gas, alcohol and kerosene.
I think the tent is more of a problem than the gas. Take her out, hook to the biggest thing you think she'll pull and make her bark. The gas will take care of itself.
I was chisel plowing with the HC TEN and really making her bark. A gentleman asked how I could do that, what if it broke? My answer was I'll fix it. But the bottom line is that is what they were made to do, and they aren’t happy unless you let them do it.

Sounds like a good option all right, tried to get av gas a couple of years ago and unless I knew some one with an aircraft I had no chance!

should not be hard to get Av gas. some of the airports for the small planes have pay at the pump's just like filling your car up.

Yes, to pay at the pump at 2 of my local airports, anyone with a good credit card can buy, It helps in tired engines.

Pay at the pump is good option - EXCEPT

You have to be able to get into the airport.

TSA, Homeland Security and the rest of the Govt Regulators put cyclone fence with gate on the local County Airport, must have the KEY CODE.

Oh for the joys of the new millennium - and when you think it can not regress further, it does!
