Just curious - I know Cat sells modern gas (well, spark ignition) engines but of the old stuff, it all seemed to be four cylinders except for the G4600

I believe that’s right Neil.  Although I have heard of some 13000 being converted to gas.

Funny you bring up the G4600, I was visiting with a bulletin board member about them today.

I’m still hunting for one if anyone has a lead.

BP.

Hi, Bruce P.
They are a bit like hen's teeth and rocking horse droppings - or honest politicians - but the 6M series Cat 12s had 'em.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Thanks guys, Bruce, have you tried the option of looking for the requisite parts to make one up? I'd guess the cylinder head and the manifolds might be the trickiest part to find. Pistons could be made. Carb and mag would be relatively easy to procure, even if not OEM. Governor could be a challenge though

Well Neil, as far as I can tell, you should be able to use the front cover pieces from a late R4. Pistons could come from an R4 as well.  The cam shows a different PN from the diesel, I don’t know if the profiles are different, but the diesel cam wouldn’t have the lobe to run the fuel pump. Manifolds could be made, albeit not nearly as pretty as the originals. Heads are the real hang up.  Josh Yoos had the idea of using two R4 heads and cutting them down.  I think that could work if the bolt patterns were the same.  I’d just have to look and see.  BP
