I was browsing the Cat History site and viewed the vintage image below. It was described as "1929 - Caterpillar Sixty with bulldozer blade assisting in the landscape work at Lincoln Park, Chicago." I like to study the vintage images to see what life was like during the time the picture was taken. After a minute, I recognized exactly where the image was taken. I have a client who lives in the building to the left and have been working there for a few years. The water in the vintage pic is the far north end of Belmont Harbor along Lake Shore Drive in Chicago.

Thank you Bruce!

I actually spent a little time one day playing around on Google streetview trying to figure out where that picture was taken. I was thinking the water in the old photo was maybe one of the ponds in the Southern part of Lincoln Park, but none of the buildings in the background were right. I guess I didn't go far enough North on Lake Shore Drive.

Bruce, Dave-

I remember seeing a lot of those photos during the recent Members Event. It is really cool to see the same views as they currently exist. Thanks for posting.

Dave, the 230 E Balbo image includes my alma mater, Columbia College. It is the tall building in the center of the vintage pic. The Blackstone Hotel is the tall building on the left. Thanks for adding that next set of comps. Lots of fun.

It's too hot outside to tinker in the garage, so located a few more Chicago ones:

Lake Michigan Oak Street Beach

Illinois Central railway yard. Carbide and Carbon Building and Mather Tower in Background. These buildings look tall in the old pictures, but are dwarfed today. You can't even see them from a street-level view.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
