Under the seat tank on my D2 are three tapped openings. One of them is suppose to be a tank vent. There is a tube inside the tank going from the tapped hole to the cap. My question is since there was just a plug in it how would I go about venting the fuel tank ? I don't like the idea of leaving the fill cap loose. I tried to get the parts from Cat and they are not available. Anyone have a method or idea how to do this ?

The piece that is missing (in place of the vent plug) is a 2F3850 filter assy. This is the same unit used on the pony manifold and for some carb. vents. There is nothing magic about it except it has a filter media. I have found a standard substitute from McMaster- Carr if your interested. I'll look it up.

Thanks Old Magnet....I looked up the part # you have listed but I guess I should have been more clear on what I have. There is a Regular NPT pipe plug installed in the bung. The tube is loose except for the top in the cap. How would you attach the tube to the vent and it not leak fuel ? Do I even need the tube ?
BTW...I have the Speedy-Sleeve on the shaft and two new bushings installed in the 44 hydraulic tank.
Your help is greatly appreciated ............Bill

OK, seems like the tube has detached itself (broken?) at the bottom. That's probably why the plug was installed. Yes. you need a vent of some sort or you will pull a suction on the tank and flow will stop. Other models have hole and filter media in the cap itself.

Old Magnet......I have been searching for a fitting I could adapt to attach the tube to but have had no luck. is there a drawing where I can see how and what the tube was attached to ? MAybe a picture. I really don't want to drill out and install a breather in the cap.
Thanks............Bill

No drawing that I know of.....look into what they call "bulkhead fittings". I think one of those could be made to work.

Old Magnet......I have been looking at them but haven't found one yet. Since that bung on the tank has threads and from the looks of the tube that was in the tank it has silver solder on the bottom end which puzzles me as to how they soldered that end and screwed the fitting in and still got the steel tube with the bends into the hole at the top of the tank. I am sure I can figure something out but it is one of those little things that can bug ya ...*L*
Thanks for your help.....have a good day.........Bill

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
