Howdy folks, I've been a bit absent here for a couple years. Trying my best to be a dad and claw my way forward here. I have a friend that is working on a D2 5U series tractor. It sounds like a seal in the fuel pump went and diluted the main engine oil and the rod bearings are beat. He asked me where does one get rod bearings. I suggested he check with our local Finning Cat dealer. Other than that, I was unsure. I heard Florin Tractor closed a couple years ago. He is in southern British Columbia. Any pointers? Thank you very much.

Welcome back MM: I think you meant a 311 engine, as it is a U series, not a J? I can't make any suggestions on the bearings. Perhaps someone else knows how to get a set; have to guess they would need to be sized differently from stock? Is he going to regrind the crankshaft? JM

Thank you Juiceman! Yes, I glitched there. D311 motor. Any ideas on good aftermarket or OEM are appreciated. I will check with him but I think he would have mentioned if he thought the crank was too far.

When I did my D311, I pieced together the rod bearings from whatever I could find on the market, including from the dealer. Standard size shells are fairly common so if you wanted to rebuild the crank, you could get those shells from the dealer

first thing is have the crank measured. no point looking for bearing if you dont know what size you need or if it can be salvaged. the dealer is probably the most likely source. you could also try acl bearing company they might have a listing. if you have a friendly engine builder they might be able to find a set that can be made fit.

there are methods to rebuild the crank.
you can even line bore the block to take different bearing shells.
its also possible to cast new white metal bearings in place then bore them to size often done with vintage cars. ive seen it done. the process starts with grinding the crank true again. then you machine the block to prep it for new white metal. make your moulds and patterns so you can pour undersize bearings then they get bored to size to match the reground crank.

Thank you everyone for the pointers. I will advise him to make double sure his crank is good and probably sounds like Finning will be his best bet.

Hi Mangoman,

A couple more ideas to add to the mix. There is a company in the southern US that will re-babbitt your existing bearing shells. They aren’t cheap, buuuuuuut they can build them up to any thickness, so if your journals are too far under size, that can be a safe and effective solution. They are in Louisiana or that region.

Number two: If your crank is usable and your local dealership can’t get your bearing, I would try F.P. Smith in California. I know they have a boatload of rod bearing sets, because I inadvertently ordered 311 rod bearings from them, instead of pony motor rod bearings (which they do not have lol)

Good luck,
