Found this number on my D7: 17A10407.

Need help identifying model, year, etc., and especially how to access manuals and instructions on where to start with pony motor and everything else I need to check out and do to machine to get it going. As I understand it, it had a coolant leak and may have overheated in past 3 years, but I don't think engine is frozen. I see very old 3/4 or 1" coolant hoses on left side, but have not taken them off yet.

I am totally new to old Cats [but not new to old diesel farm tractors (with pony motors)].

Thanks,

Jim

Cat is in Ortonville, Mn. Boy, if anybody is close, it would be great to have an expert come and take a look at it, or at least provide me with a phone number so we could talk.

So I found the number 17A10407.

Is there a model number for the pony motor? I am so new to the Cat world, I see all these various model numbers, say for example, a D7 17A, but when referencing just those numbers, I find that they apply to many many years of Cat models. Thus, thank you for informing me that my cat looks like it may be a 1958 123-125 hp. But, as I understand it, the number "17A10407" should tell me everything I need to know about my cat, including, the specs, what op/svc manual I need to get, the pony motor model and specs, and how to order parts for the pony and the cat.

Thanks again, Jim

Your D17A serial number is the magic number that will get you all the information you need. That number will let you know which books you will need for parts and service manuals. Opposite side of the stated for me.

Kracked1, thanks for feedback.

I was first in contact with Bill Amaducci (VP ACMOC), several days ago, who told me where to find serial number. He said that once I got that to him, he could provide me with all the info I needed. Since I have not heard from him in several days, I figured he could be on vacation, etc., thus I re-posted today in general discussion forum. I am sure he will get back to me soon.

Thanks again.

looks like cat service manuals used range from 45.oo and up on ebay.

Go ahead and get the real thing instead of copies but every persons budget is different.

I agree with the 58 build year and my book shows it to be a D7C. My Cat book don't have anything with that low of numbers. catskinner

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
