Folks, I am new here and like the site. I have had yellow fever most all my adult life. just sold a D5H XL and for some reason I needed a replacement with something as old as I am to fill the hole it left, so I picked up a 1954 D2  , 5U 14511. [u]not working! Issue is it was jammed up and would not turn over. finnally freed it up and turning the engine over by hand there is a clunk at the same spot in a complete revolution each time. I have narrowed it down to 3 missing teeth on the flywheel ring gear. Hoping that is all the damage there is. Going to attempt to remove it through the access cover.
question: Where can I get a replacement gear?
can you buy any gaskets for these D2's, or do you need to make yourself.
Also, are there any old yellow fellows near me, (Pembroke, NH, USA) with one of these.
thanks

cat does have gaskets for these old girls. if you have a parts book you can check www.parts.cat.com for availability. if you register you can even order via your local dealer. ive had success even with a phone call to the dealer parts desk.

I was able to source an aftermarket ring gear for a 1942 4R D6 a few years ago through Florin Tractor, which is now closed. So I think they're out there. Might take some sleuthing.

I did look at the parts book and see it is a 7B6248 that it needs.
Not sure how much difference between that one and the one on machinery trader which is as you mentioned a 7B 6249.
thank you for your effort

I guess you know more than the parts book but mine shows two different assembly numbers for the flywheel and different part numbers for the ring gear. Are you sure your dealing with the right s/n?

Have the flywheel out and have confirmed the part # stamped on the ring gear to be 7B6248 also page 38 of the parts catalog for 5U13237 - up. the 7B6249 gear is on the next two pages for newer than my machine.
thanks

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
