I was reading my SRM for the D318 Engine, and it said that to flush the cooling system one should fill drain the coolant and refill the system with a mixture of muriatic acid, water, and antifreeze then operate for 3 hours. Drain and refill with water and antifreeze.

Is this still the recommend procedure, or has modern technology produced other substances that are better for cleaning out the system?

Get something from the store. I have used the muriatic acid though. Didn't help on the overheating much, but did soften up the scale so it was easier to rod out the radiator.

If you're just doing it as a preventative, I would use one of the commercial radiator flushes. Most are citric acid/citrate based these days. They are safe for people and the radiator and are reasonably effective, though you may want to allow a little longer run time than the muriatic acid recomendation. You could take out the drain valve plug or unscrew the temperature gauge probe to gauge when you have removed all the scale.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Thanks. I don't have to do it to the block or head, because I've just finished rebuilding it and everything has either been hot tanked or washed with solvent under pressure, but there is still the radiator to think about. How do I clean that by itself so I don't run all that dirty junk through my nice clean engine?

Take the radiator apart and rod it out.Just be careful with all the bolts, don't know if I am just lucky or what but a little heat does wonders.I have used brass brazing rod on the most plugged tubes, finished with a1/8 by 3/4 piece of aluminum. The gaskets were still available from Cat last year.Ray

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
