Worked on my Fifteen with combine engine yesterday, not sure why heat index was 107* After installing rebuilt mag and modified carb I started for the first time. It ran smooth but had a terrible noise in the front gear train. I removed the magneto drive and found the idler gear between the crank and mag had a lot of play in the gear bearing and the teeth worn sharp. I was wondering if anybody had a parts print of this front cover set up? Also, how hard would be to find a replacement gear once I remove it? Thanks for any Info.

I've got one that's parts. I'll look and see what shape the idler is in.

Has anybody else experienced problems with the idler gear shaft not getting lubricated in a combine engine? After removing my front cover I found that the retaining pin that holds the idler gear shaft in the front housing was broken. I'm guessing the retaining pin sheered off due to lack of lubrication and spun in location. The donor parts I have are in good shape but I noticed that it also at one time had broken the retaining pin and someone used a strap of metal and two screws to retain the pin in the housing. The governor housing shaft on the donor parts has a fitting in the middle of the housing and was plumbed into a tee fitting for the engine oil pressure gauge. My housing did not have that fitting so I will use that one and run a oil line to it. I'm hoping that will keep the idler gear shaft lubricated, just wondered if anybody else has had that problem.

I'll look at my parts engine and see if it's had any mods there.

Went and looked at mine, no mods that I can see. Looks like tapered pin is still in one piece. Shaft doesn't appear to have been loose in case.

Let me know if you'd like some parts.

Why do you refer to this engine as a "combine engine"? I ask because there are a couple of CAT engines out in my yard that came out of john deere combines from approx. 1932. I am curious which CAT track layer type tractors used these engines so I can put them up for sale and know what they fit. I was told they would fit a CAT 22. Since reading your post I suspect they fit other tractors. One thing that might interest CAT owners is that in the original John Deere manuals (which I have) for the combines seem to have made it a point to avoid all possible mention of these engines being CAT engines. I recognized the parts numbers as CAT numbers so I knew. Apparently John Deere did this for two years. Both (I have two) these engines have radiators that look like cat radiators but don't say CAT. Also these engines have radiators mounted behind the engines using a shaft drive (for fan) over the top of the engine. Did CAT do this or was this a JD add on to a CAT engine? If this set up was CAT then these engines were used for other purposes than just in tractors. If so what were the other purposes?

can you post some pic's of your jd combines??
what i understoot is that john Deere bought the Caterpillar combine devision, so the first ones as JD brand were in fact Caterpillars.
The engines on the combine were normaly used and produced for the tractors but for the combine usage there were some slight changes on the engine, probablu for easy acces to it as on the combine one side had diffucult acces. as the governator changed from left side to right, aswell as magneto is run from governor changed sides, as magneto is in place of oil filler it is then mounted on top of governor housing and some other changes as air intake and place of air filter.
the Thirty six combine had the engine of the Caterpillar Fifteen tractor.

Handhewn, Are your engines flat-head or overhead valves?
22 engines are overhead valve.

Don't have pictures of combines (they were scrapped). I do still have the manuals. I was remembering them as 31A combines but they might be 36A cambines. I will look when I get home.

There were several different makes of engine that Holt, later Caterpillar used on their combines. The one I have is a flathead engine similar to a 15 tractor. I have seen a valve in head combine engine, similar to a 22. I have heard reference to a Lycoming being used but cannot confirm. I have a Cat parts book for a Wisconsin "C-1" used on Holt 34 & 36 combines.

The overhead cam 2ton engine was also used on combines, I have two of these. The 2ton engine seems unmodified just a clutch and pulley bolted on. Even has the tractor gas tank and hood.

It's easy to spot a Holt or Cat 36. They are galvinized where the John Deere is green. I'm told practically all parts will interchange.
