Engine Identification Caterpillar D318

Hi. I'm trying to determine what this engine was originally intended for. It was installed on a Paddle Wheel River Barge that was docked in St. Louis, Mo. I did some research and believe that D318 Engines with a prefix 3V were originally intended for Generators, 6V were for marine applications but I don't know what 5V applications were intended for... The person who had the Paddle Wheel boat said He believed the engine originally came out of a D6 Dozer and it was rebuilt and converted to power a hydraulic pump to run the paddle wheel motors. The 5V series D318 are industrial engines for various applications. 5V7627 is a 1949 production unit in the 5V5001 to 5V17499 production series.
