A darn good engine machinist is in the middle of a 6 volt generator rebuild when I called him today. He says it is a gear drive off from a CAT 22! To top off the discussion, the fellow he is doing the rebuild for is using a John Deere B starter with a different drive and nose cone on what he believes is an original ring gear! The CAT guy is from Massachusetts that owns this project. What does anyone know about this starter project? I don't always have shoulder enough to crank the 22 any more.....

Drujinin , Electric starters were available for 22's from Factory, I actually have here an Original 22 Starter Motor I was given years ago , A Group of Us have made 10 Repo. Starters using the Original Style Delco Remy Body, Had Nose cones cast and Machined , all internals are available per Delco Parts Books and came from USA [Probably made in China!!] and We made them all 12 volts, the Ring gears were made in India from Cat. Spec Sheet . Took a little work to Measure the Machining Specs for Flywheel , Cat didn't do that to all [like Later Tractors ] Flywheels. End product works Brilliant. saves a lot of Hard cranking which Us Older fellows don't enjoy these Days. , Just finished a 6G Thirty and Fitted it with Electric Starter [Genuine starter and Ring Gear I found] But had a nose cone made for another Member Out Here who is rebuilding an R4 .LJ

have you tried stomping down on the crank handle with your foot? that's how I start my Twenty Eight. right hand on the radiator cap, left on the top of the dozer blade. crank positioned with handle near top. swift push down like starting my old Indian Chief. fires right up. the book says "do not spin the crank as this may cause the impulse starter to release and the engine to backfire."
