Wrap a string around the two pulleys, and measure the length. Take it to a genuine parts house, and have a good parts man, if you can locate one, and have him look in the size chart for the correct length. You must also know the width of the "V" in the pulleys, at the widest point.

Soapy, does one measure the inside or outside diameter of the belt groove? I need to get one for my pony governor.
Cheers,
Neil.

If you can post the Cat part number I can probably give you the size.

V belts are always measured on the Outside.

I usually wrap a wide tape measure around the outside of the pulleys. That will give you a direct measurement.

To measure a belt, I put the tape in a vise (lightly) and mark the belt with a piece of chalk. Put the end of the tape on the chalk mark and pull out the tape along with the belt and keep going around the belt til you get back to the chalk mark. If you have a helper handy (to hold the tape measure) you don't need the vise. 👍

In the 1955 Gates belt catalog 6B5653 is the old Gates number 8520TR for a 42-1/2 in. x 23/32 top width x 44 deg. side belt.

I'd post the pages except it's so darn fuzzy I can hardly read it myself....
