Electric start conversion, D4

I bought a D4 7U with a factory electric start. The system was made complete and would include generator, starter, switch etc. I may use the machine for a parts tractor and would have no use for the system. I did have the generator and starter rebuilt at a local shop. The 60 AMP circuit breaker, glow plug switch are new.

What would the entire electric start system be worth?

Here is my take😉 😉
Although a complete "factory" direct start setup can add as much as $1,500 to a tractor or grader, the value of that actual starter is not that great. Also by "complete" installation that includes the unique dash, hood, fuel priming pump, battery box, glow plugs and wiring harness, switches, cabling, etc........and the factory bored bellhousing. Especially desirable is the wet clutch bellhousing.

The original type starter with inertia drive bendix is quite obsolete and is somewhat of a "bang" type unit. They are prone to the same "jamming" problems that the old Ford Flatheads had where you had to rock the vehicle or loosen the starter to get em to free up. I would think the only market would be for someone that wants the original even though the later 40MT and 42MT conversions are far superior. A few years back I recall Cat getting $1,000 plus exchange for these units. This was at the same time when a local rebuilder had them on the shelf for a few hundred dollars. Might try ebay and see what happens.

The 24 volt generator would top out in value comparable to having a 12 volt unit converted, about $250 - $300. I'd guess the starter value to be about the same.

As you all know Cat owners in general are pretty tight with a buck so asking and getting are two different things😄 😄 There's always someone willing to take it "off your hands" for cheap. Hope these ramblings are of some help.
