Hi All, I am looking for the size of wire used on the magneto coils and the number of turns required for the primary and secondary. The reason it is that it is getting harder to find a good coil down under and i am going to start winding my own.

All help would be greatfull.

Thanks

Daryl, once you get that information, would you mind posting it to the forum for future reference - thanks!

This guy will know. He rebuilt my 22 coil.

you also might need to know the ohms. Thinking that the number of turns may need to be slightly different due to variability of wire diameter or thinkness of the insulation.
If you have a winding counter that you use for winding, you might be able to count the turns after baking out the varnish on the old coil. Please, do let us know how it works out

Instead of doing it yourself, have you thought about a local motor shop? They rewind everything, they have the tools and and the expertise. If I were to try to rewind something, I can be sure to mess it up. As an apprentice I learned about motor rewinding, it is in my mind more art than skill. Around here, I can take anything into a motor shop and working or not they can fix it. The cost only depends on how deep they get into it. With my thumbs, cost is cheap after I have done and re-done a couple of times.
I'm not afraid of hard work; I can lay down beside it anytime and take a nap.

Daryl, you might be able to collaborate with a local motor shop. Doubtful they would have the fine wire needed as most shops don't wind tiny motors, but they do have the winding machine, and the varnish diptank, or VPI varnish is better. You could buy the wire they don't have and make the winding core needed unless the wire is wound directly on the pole over a thin paper insulation. This is interesting stuff, and you know I like a challenge, so I hope you can make good on the coils. If nothing else, visit all the shops you can to pick their brains.

Was looking on the 'Bay today, there are loads of Chinese coil winders for sale. Some of them can be programmed extensively. Also found a fair amount of data online about coil ratios, insulation, etc.

Hi Stephen, Yes i have seen the coil winders on ebay but i got a better deal in Thailand last year when i was there, the same this year i got 15m of brake material for the D4's (non asbestos)

As for the coils themself i have roughly worked out there is 250 turns on the primary and 25000 turns on the secondary which is 1:100 as for the wire size i have not measured the primary yet but the secondary is either 48 gauge or 50 gauge which is extremely small, so i am looking at useing a larger gauge with a fewer less turns, this will make them a little bit more robust.

i will keep you informed on the progress.

Daryl

Daryl, I assume you are home from South Africa, how did the trip go? Did you make any progress on rewinding coils?
Regards
Mike

It is very hard to wind 48 or 50 usg without the right winding equipment, the wire has no strength and will pull in half if you don't look at it right. You will also need to add cell insulation between the layers of wire. I don't think that you will be end up with a working coil, but give it a try and report back...WA7OPY

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
