Hi all,
I am just looking for info regarding the air cleaner tops on early Cats (Pre 1932/grey) as i have noticed that most of these early tractors did not have anything other then a pipe coming from the air cleaner itself with no top was this correct?.I have even seen this in Cat Literature from that era that also shows them with nothing just the pipe coming from the air cleaner itself.Did Cat make or offer a top for these early tractors?

Cat did not make pre-cleaners. Most were probably installed at the dealers. There were several different styles and makers. Donaldson was a popular brand.

And what about the "duck bill" Wally? What is the interest in them, if any? It just struck me that possibly we could add that to the Club store if no one else is making them. I saw only one new one since I have been collecting other than those already installed on a tractor.

The Attachments Parts Catalog for the Sixty, form 3098, shows this precleaner:

There seems to be a lot of interest in the duckbill, especially on tailseat tractors.

So i guess alot of Cat customers ordered them without the pre cleaner/top during that period?.Are the pre cleaners with the glass jar correct for the early Cats?

I believe they came out on the diesels. I have not seen them in any of the parts books for the early gas tractors. They will fit on the gas tractors ( 10,15 22 ) and I have seen them with this type of pre-cleaner.

Wally,

I don't mean to contradict here, but this is a Duck Bill type pre-cleaner out of the parts catalog for Caterpillar Tractor Attachments (TEN and FIFTEEN)

It's not shown in the standard TEN Parts Book. But this book shows all the options available for the TEN and FIFTEEN. There was no glass pre-cleaner listed.

Respectfully,

Pat

I'm thinking that it's not a pre cleaner in the normal way we would think of one ( it is labeled as a hood) It would keep the rain from a straight shot at the pipe, also wheat straw etc but anything smaller than the bar spacing will go into the oil bath cleaner

Pat,

I believe Wally is saying that he has "seen them with this type of pre-cleaner" but that they would not necessarily be "correct." Both my FIFTEEN and TWENTY have the glass type for lack of anything else to mount. They are not "correct" but do the job. This is the reason I asked about interest in the duck bill being reproduced.

I stand corrected. The ten parts book does not have a pre-cleaner but the 15 and 22 parts book show both the duckbill and the mushroom style that Phil dirt and Pat posted pictures of. Also the tractor attachment book also shows both of these for the ten and small 15. If you look in the 10 photo archives book there is not a pre-cleaner on any of the factory photos of the tens which led me to believe (maybe mistakenly) that they might not have been installed until the tractor arrived at the dealer.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
