I've got two pony engines completely torn down. The original DW10 is a rusty mess but has standard bores and standard crankshaft. A second engine, from a D6 9U I believe, has been rebuilt and has great parts but has pitted bores.

The D6 pony has been bored .030, and crank and rods are ground .030. Pistons, and bearings look great. My plan is to re-bore the rusty block and fit the .030 over pistons and re-grind the crank to match the bearings that I have. I've been through stuff like this before and know it will work. There seems to have been very little running on this engine after it was rebuilt (rod bearings have 1968 date inside).

I don't have a D6 parts book, only DW10 stuff. The Pistons I want to use are 2F3668 (semifinished), but they are .030 oversize. I want to put in new rings- it has 3x 1/8" compression rings and 1 x 3/16 oil ring with expander. Pistons are ALUMINUM and not cast iron and all the rings are above the pin.

Does anyone have the P/N of .030 oversize rings for the D6 9U pony? I'll probably get rings from Hastings or something, but wanted to start with a Cat part number. My DW10 books don't show any .030 oversize pistons or rings.

Compression ring 5B2
Oil ring 4B9997
Set of Rings 4F9876 count is wrong because it includes 2 oil rings per piston instead of 1
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Thanks CCJersey.

When did they switch from the cast iron pistons to aluminum? My service books show pistons with a ring at the bottom of the skirt.

Hi Team,
to the best of my knowledge cast iron pistons were only used in Vertical ponies.

Scan chart below gives standard oversized pistons and dimensions for both Horizontal and Vertical ponies.

The semi-finished pistons could then be machined to your required dimensions for the least metal removed bore cleanup--and/or depending upon rings available.

From memory some after market semi-finished pistons will cleanup to larger bore sizes depending upon the supplier.

To make the old style Part Numbers work in the Dealers computer the number format needs to be 6 digits so the 5G3 ring Part No will be 5B0003 for it to work today--if still available.
Also for reference only as an example a L364 lock would become 0L0364 to work today.

Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

Eddie,

Thank you very much for your effort and sheets. This does help as it gives me the typical skirt clearance that they run on these. I'm going to have the cylinders bored and honed to fit my aluminum pistons. Why they are marked .040 and are actually .030 over is unknown to me, but it will work. I'm going to have the crank ground to match my bearings so all should be like new.

Thanks again

Greg

Hi Team,
my take is that someone had worn or available 0.040" OS pistons and simply machined them true to fit a 0.030" over bore after cleanup in a different block to save taking said block out more than needed--save the next size up re-bore for another day.
I guess also that they neglected to re-stamp the pistons to the new smaller O/S dimension to make it easier for the next repairer.
Cheers,
Eddie B.
