We're looking at trading iron to get an 8000 gallon water tanker/sprayer behind a DW20.

Since all the spare parts the previous owner has will be going to scrap soon after we get the tanker, what should I save? I had thought about getting a whole DW20 just to be safe, or is that overkill. Space is no problem, and I believe I can get it all for about scrap price. May even get the cable operated pan on the back too. It could be useful and the tires would be spares for the tanker.

Any special things to know about the later DW20s? Will it load, or does it pretty much have to be pushed? Pusher would be a 9U๐Ÿ˜„

Curtis and Bobby got the engine swapped out this week and we cranked it today, managed to get some slight braking effect from the tractor rear wheel brakes and drove it about 10 miles home this evening. :BG:

It is an 8000 gallon water tanker with pump and spray nozzles built on DW20 87E644.

Engine that was bad (no one knows much about what was bad, just that it was bad when purchased by the previous owner) was 90E385 (an intercooled D337F)

Replacement engine--out of another DW20 which had a set of compactor wheels on the back, is 2S8987. Not intercooled, just turbocharged. It runs well, no smoke until you let it lug a bit and the turbocharger comes into play. (My ears are still buzzing a couple hours later)

Several things were different on the two engines, but Curtis swapped the clutches and modified the rear mounting arrangement to bolt it into the frame and it all worked out fine with the driveshaft U-joint bolting up correctly.


I think there's more to it if I could have gotten a little more push on the throttle, just too many worn out pins and pivots in the linkage and perhaps needs the linkage adjusted a bit. We were trying to get it to cut off with the pedal, but couldn't get that, so I guess we should have gone for more travel in the GO! direction. I got up to about 25 mph on the straights in high range-5th gear according to my escort. Is there more than that in the DW20?

With very little braking available, some badly flat-spotted tires and no power steering, I really didn't want to go any faster. ๐Ÿ˜†

tires appear to be mostly good, 14.00-24's on the front, 29.5--29's?? on the rear and tanker. the fronts are the only suspect looking ones.

I haven't driven over the hill to look, but I think the scraper DW20 is still there. I need to check, we have to go back and get the bad engine to put in the shed for parts. Already been scavenging it trying to get all the bits and pieces to hook everything up on the replacement engine.

I think I have a set of manuals coming from various ebay sellers. Not sure if the Serviceman's reference for the DW20 will have much on the D337F engine or will I need an engine manual?
