Be aware that the template shown is for tractor flywheel housings. Graders and Industrial Housings are different.
You didn't specify which D318 application.

Mr. Old Magnet: I want to say BIG thanks for the information that YOU have provided MANY people over the years. I have seen your diagrams shared all over, but no credits to you.
How about one for a 311 engine next? Hahahaha! I have known too many that have tried and failed to get them "just right" and gunshy of any more. Don't forget to have a bunch of starter parts and glow plug heads available too! Thanks again, JM

The D2 templates have been out there for decades. No problems that I'm aware of. Again this is for tractors, I suspect differences for graders and Industrial versions where different flywheel housings are used.

Ahhhhh! Never seen these before. Thanks Pete! Only seen the ones for the 318's. If you had a dollar for each time you shared, you would be richer than you already are! Thx. JM

For the 8T, center is 3.625" Horizontal and 10.3125" Vertical, rest of the template is the same.

the "fun" bit is getting everything marked and drilled accurately especially if the housing is still in the machine.

it would be easiest to do why you have pulled the engine for other work. drilling square to the housing so the bolts and the nose piece lines up square with the ring gear and thus th gear mesh correctly is difficult freehand. a mag drill would help with this. with the engine removed you could clamp a bit of heavy steel plate to the machined surface for the engine and use that to get enough step over with a mag drill and be almost perfectly square to that face.

the best way would be to set the housing up in a milling machine or radial arm drill so you can use the machined faces to be dead square as the casting could be out a bit remember these are sand cast parts.
