I'm rebuilding a 1926 Cat Two Ton Master Clutch, But because the saw tooth plates are that worn out i have to get new steel plates cut out of C1080 harden & temped steel with a Lazer cutter & CAD drawing, which they look very good.
Now i have to get linings for the Three friction plates, If i measure the tell tale markings on the inner hub the overall thickness is 8 mm. Which means 3mm friction, 2 mm Steel & 3mm Friction all riveted together. Is this correct? or can anybody tell me what they have done or the thickness of there friction plates they have used in Metric or imperial measurements?
Any information would be helpful.
Hope to hear from all the two ton owners that have relined there master clutches.
Thanks, Willsy/Australia.

Did you ever find out what the correct thickness should be, because my 2 Ton clutch plates with their new bimetallic linings are 11.97mm, or a fraction under 1/2" thick, and that is too thick as you suspected, I can't get any significant free play in the springs, and the #3 clutch plate is sitting just outside the driving flange. When assembled the total clutch pack thickness is 1-3/4" and I suspect I need to shave about 1/3" off those new linings unfortunately, so as you asked this question 2 years ago I figured you must have the answer by now.😖mokin:

Is it possible to estimate the original new lining thickness by using the rivet size, because I see they used a 3/16" X 3/8" rivet to attach the linings.

Thankyou Eddie, that is great info to have and I appreciate you taking the time to check your books for me. Those linings are thin aren't they, only 1/8", but I guess there are 3 friction plates in those 2 Tons, so the 25HP flat out from the motor equals only about 8HP load per plate spread over a good area.
All the best
Mike

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
