I see a casting area under the pony engage lever that looks like maybe a electric starter can be mounted with a bit of machine work. Is this possible? Anyone have pics of a starter on a 5J?

Yup, that's where it goes.
Here's all you want to know (and some you probably don't)😄 😄

2 questions
1} is it possible to have both the D/E start and a pony motor, or does the starter pinion location preclude it?
2)Has anyone ever seen a direct electric start on a 1V series DW10? Mine has a bolt on cover on the bellhousing for one, but I can't see how it could fit, as the steering box seems way too close to that location, on the inside of the frame rail.
Just wondering,

I don,t have any parts books to run down bell housing numbers but it,s possible the same bell is used on other applications of the engine. It should be a D318 engine in it so the D6 8U & 9U use that engine & also in industrial uses.

Hi Alan,
On question # 1,
So long as there is a raised boss provision on the bell housing there is no problem having both either with the original type starter or the 40,42,50MT conversions with one exception.
On the D2, if you want the deluxe installation that allows you to run the factory original engine side covers without modification the fit is to close to the pony clutch operating lever and cover which needs to be removed and blanked off.

You will have to find a home for the batteries if you run both.

On question # 2, I don't know about the DW10 but any of the above starters will mount to the D318. See my website for the indexing.

SMF52, I see you live in Bangor so your up in the Poconos so your not far away. I live up in Dallas & I worked for Cleveland Bros. for 36 yrs. and retired the end of 1991. I ran the engine rebuilding shop there at the Wilkes Barre shop. We had lots of customers up in your area & around the Poconos.I don,t know if you knowed it but Cleveland now owns Beckwith Machinery Co. the Cat dealer in western Pa. so now they have more than 25 branch stores now. With your question about the starter OM that come back to you is the guy that knows about starters & changeover of them.

OM thanks for the info, I bought a MT 42 starter and the Cat helical starter drive. I am still looking for and researching the drive end housing. I believe the offset housing is also known as a SAE #1 housing. I will most likely just order the 512-135 from Barsanco.

SJ Thanks for the info, I am rebuilding/restoring a 3J and 5J crawler and have been looking for a Cat dealer that will be helpful in finding these old parts.

I have been having trouble opening the Barsanco website. Have you???
If so you could try the CPC source.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
