The starting engines on all the three lungers will interchange. The D 40 parts book shows 3 different air cleaners and manifolds depending on serial numbers. The early were like the D 35 and the late same as RD 6 and 3 cyl. D 6.

The starting engine air cleaner was the same (2B3733) from 6E901 D35 thru 3G1434 D40, but plumbing was different. Effective with 3G1435 D40 the direct mounted air cleaner (3B726) runs clear thru the 2H series. Also into the 9G D7 and 1H D8. The manifold and carburetor are the same from 3G616 D40 thru 2H1421 RD6.

Would anyone have a photo of a machine with the correct air cleaner assembly for Dalby's Forty pilot motor to help him out so he knows what to look for.

Also Dalby after talking to you the other night I seem to remember Bruce Carey from Nobby showing me his RD6 with the same water leak behind the valve springs as you described with yours. I wonder if others have experienced this same problem. Probably a spot on the water jacket where derbis accumulates resulting in a rust pocket. The way most of these machines have been abused over the years it it amazing there is anything left of them.

Hey guys
Yeh Andrew i recon your on the money it seems to be leaking around the bottom of the water jacket on the back cylinder over the years built up with mud etc she has got a bit thin in there.
Ive been told that they are the same pilot as the d6 and d7 just with a different timing cover to take the crank handle through the bonnet?
I havent done any research on this myself but gives me a bit of a lead!
Shes very hard to get these bits here in Australia unfortunately.
Thanks for the other info and part numbers guys appreciate it, it will help me try find something.
Steve i would be interested in the forty you know of that might be parting out, if i could just get the air cleaner i could make the rest of the pipe work if i had too
Thanks again

If you can find a parts book it is easy to see just what you need. The easiest solution is to update to the direct mounted cleaner on top of carb. One of those should be easy to find with the carb top adapter.

Dalby.
Your starting engine block will fit from any 3 cyl engine . D7 nine G or earlier 1H D8 Pre 2000 serial no.
The later D7 7M 3T 4T or D8 8R or 2U blocks although they look similar will not fit.
Will be hard to find in Aus.

You are right Dick, in fact I saw those air cleaners brand new at Florin Tractor Parts a few years back, from memory they were about $180, and I'd be surprised if Florin didn't have the mounting adapter too.

My RD6 pilot motor leaks water behind the valves too, on at least 10 occasions I've used JB Weld and small steel patches to chase the drips and I've improved it a lot though I still drain a bit of water from the sump before starting her if she has sat for several months.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
