I was wondering if any of you could tell me how to set the governor speeds on my diesel forty. I would like to run the rated speed up to about 950 RPM for use on our sawmill. I don't think that should be a problem since Caterpillar ran a Nebraska test at both 850 and 1000 RPM. I also have a diesel fifty I would like to slow the idle speed down a little. Thanks for any help. Dave

Hi Team,
scanned below is all the Early Diesel Engine Gov. Setting Data I have.
It is taken from the Serviceman's Reference Book on Caterpillar Diesel Engines, Form No 5060B, dated 12-47.
Shown is the first generation stuff, and the second generation stuff for future reference as needed by others in future--Grab 'em now while they are up.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

Thanks for the information , Eddie. That's just what I needed. -Another question- I have a pulley on my Diesel Forty that was originally on a PS series Thirty. The pulley has a brass plate on it that says to periodically put the transmission in high gear and operate for a few minutes to lube the transmission bearings. Do you know if that is necessary on the Diesel Forty since the transmission design is quite a bit different. Thanks again. Dave

Yes, the lube procedure applies to the Diesel Forty too. A little while ago I finished going completely through this belt pulley drive that is specifically for the Diesel Forty/RD6 machines and it has the same instruction tag on it as you mentioned is on yours. I can't quote it word for word, but it goes something like "put the machine in gear and hold both steering clutch levers back, then engage the main clutch for 2-3 minutes to lubricate the transmission gears." I remember thinking, "how many arms and hands does it take to do all that at the same time?"

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
