Does anyone know if the later RD6 pinion bearing 3b8845 will interchange with a diesel 35 pinion bearing 1b4138? Or if anyone is aware of an updated bearing number for the diesel 35 that would be appreciated also.
Thank you
The Cat NPR says the later 3B8845 does not interchange with the earlier 1B4138. The 1B4138 is a ball bearing and was also used in all the Diesel Forty tractors as well as RD-6 #2H1 through #2H1549. The 3B8845 first showed up on #2H2866 and went along with a different rear case to hold it, because it is a roller stye bearing and has a separate outer race that needs to be retained by a dowel pin. Attached is the RD-6 parts manual diagram that shows the newer 3B8845 roller bearing, as well as the retaining dowels & different rear case that those roller bearings need to stay together, so won't work in a Diesel 35.
Thank you very much. That’s exactly the information I was after. Do you know if there’s any modern equivalents to the 1b4138?
I'm surprised how long it took Cat to figure out putting taper roller bearings adjacent to the bevel pinion. That was a field changeover option on the 5U but after mine which is a '53 model
HI! Here is a list of bearings that have the same dimensions as 1B4138. While I find that this is good information, it can sometimes be wrong when there are special features that the bearing needs.
naylorbros beat me to it - I just went out and checked the Diesel Forty I currently have ripped apart and Cat's 1B4138 bearing is a Fafnir 412W in that one.
Also in the Caterpillar Accessory and Supply catalog in the technical documents section of the members-only area, there are several pages of bearing cross-reference information. It is about halfway through the catalog.
Thank you all very much for all of the helpful information. I’m hoping with all of that I should be able to come up with something. Thanks again!
Looks like the modern equivalent is a 6412 bearing. Thanks again
I do not think that the 6412 bearing is a fully loaded bearing. A fully loaded bearing will have filling slots so more balls can be installed, which increases the load-carrying capacity of the bearing. 1B4138 and Fafnir 412W are fully loaded. The price for a fully loaded bearing compared to a regular bearing will make you cry. If I know I have a project that I am going to need bearings for, I will start watching eBay for high-quality old stock bearings and put them on the shelf until I need them.
That makes sense. If I’m unable to find a fully loaded bearing Do you think that the non fully loaded 6412 bearing would suffice for light use and occasionally pulling a disc on a few acres a couple times a year?
Thank you for the help.
