It was such a nice day, that I decided to retrieve a D4 that I had purchased for parts from last year. Sad to say, my recovery missions are by myself and lack the excitement and gastronomic pleasures that Garlic Pete has to share with us. As usual, I was apprehensive about fetching another tractor carcass. Got my equipment trailer and one of our CAT RC60 forklifts loaded and on my way. Met the gentleman (Max) and had another lively BS session. I hoped that he would soften up and beg me to haul off his D6 9U31 also, but with no such luck. He said I had to haul off the stuff I bought last year before he would even consider it. I offered to take him dining and buy him his martini as well as find him a couple of waitresses looking for a grandfatherly type guy, but he said he did that the night before...
The D4 7U is actually in better shape than I thought. Sans a running engine, it does steer and brake well. My concern now is whether to rebuild the engine that had been disassembled 30 years earlier or to drop the bell housing and running motor from another tractor I have. Decisions decisions.....
My personality won’t contiouslly allow me to graft a motor with a different serial number, and have mismatched numbers....even though it would run perfectly fine.
In the meantime, it will get a hot bath prior to being wrenched on.

Really doesn’t look to bad considering. Now go get 31!

Speaking of hot bath, what kind of steam cleaner do you like. I’m thinking I need one.

Stay away from the Sams Club Karcher 4000# high pressure cold water units. The only thing that has lasted is the Honda gas motor; I procrastinated for 10 years and finally bit the bullet on a Landa hot water/4500# electric start Honda powered portable....I don’t know what you had in mind, mine is a slight overkill, but in the long run money well spent. I’ve dusted 3 of the Karcher pumps on the Sams unit. Cheap has its consequences I guess.
Believe me, I would like to get your 17 little brother 31. He couldn’t get pony to fire, took hood off and abandoned ship 20 years ago.... it has a perfect Berco sealed U/C with 20” or 22” pads. If you saw what else was in his dilapidated barn you might faint. Classic Ford Mustang, Chevy trucks, you name it, just rotting away and he hasn’t a care in the world. Oh well, none of my business!
Here’s your teaser:

Wow looks like a darn nice tractor! I would say that 17 has been around the horn a few more times, and it shows! I see 31 still has that piece of tin between the diesel tank and the case on the rear. Any way you could get a closeup of that piece so I could build one for my tractor?

Those canopy's must have been popular down there? Got a spare????

Thanks for input on the steam cleaner, I've had an old Coleman pressure washer for years and its starting to get tired. I was thinking hot water would be the way to go.

LOL!
Those photo's would be easier to look at if they weren't posted for the Aussie's!

Nice story Juice, hopefully he lets you pick up some of his other goodies. I thought I was the only person with an aversion to mismatched numbers even though it works just fine! I put the photos the right way for our part of the world. Thanks.

G, since you have so much energy to work on things that won’t “self load.” I have (3) R5’s that need your motivation 😊 Next time your down this way visiting your friend stop by and we’ll use my forklift to load them on your trailer 👍

Yes, bass ackwards not for down and around bunch, I didn’t post Picts before because they always came out well, you know... thanks to someone assisting Trish on her iPad, I tried the “hold phone with button to the right” trick and it worked. The pics of 31 might have been prior to me learning. I’m openly embarrassed that I couldn’t post pics before, but glad I finally did a few correctly.

Thanks for correct orientation Bryan. Glad I’m not the only one that tries to be a bit of a purist?

Bruce: I had several of those custom made already. PM your shipping address, and I can send you some. If I go tractor shopping and notice that all of the tin work is intact, that usually clues me in on how the previous owner was. As far as I know, that is an original CAT canopy. My question to the experts: is that an add on bypass oil filter on the right side?

Slick: when I do go visit in your ‘hood, it is to see Megan, not the negative one nor your ex friend.

Hi, Juiceman.
I see that 9U has SP for Special Parts after the ser. #. That could be just the lighting system if that was factory fitted or it could be any of a number of other things. probably most common of which was special gearing in the transmission. It looks pretty complete from 10,000 miles away. Keep working on him, M8, and it could be burning your diesel fuel one day.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

I fired up my washer, only to notice the burner wouldn’t fire off.....(maybe I jinxed myself gloating about having a “good” washer) anyways, after an hour of standing in the rain washing, it finally kicked in. Then it made such hot water and steam I couldn’t see. I know. Never content here....
Got it cleaned up decent without any degreasers.
Now that it is clean, it gives me an idea of what I am up against. I sprayed each hole with penetrating oil, and will let it soak. It’s ugly. Cylinders got plenty of water in them being exposed to the elements. At least the pony will roll over.
The previous owner told me he was lost power in using it eons ago, could barely make it back to his barn. I’m just wondering what the maladay was; one liner is real ugly, but it might be from it collecting rainwater all these years.
In the meantime, can anyone tell me what a complete engine kit for this D4 cost?
I’m still leaning towards swapping with my other parts machine; if so, I will do what Paso Bob did, by having a pony AND 24 volt DE start.
