Does anyone offer for sale in the states reproduction serial number tags or data plates?
I ask because I’ve a friend that is experimenting with his new laser tooling. I’ve seen some neat ones he has reproduced for cars and pickups by way of a photograph.
If nobody offers any, I’m considering having him make blanks that can be stamped or engraved.
Cheers! JM

Hi Team,
at The Dealer we used to have to contact Cat about new Serial Number Plates and prove that we really needed them--then we ordered them thru Parts Department and waited---last one I ordered was for the ANARE Vostok Traverse Australian built Antarctic D4--alas the new plate was not the same style as original and incorrect Serial Number was stamped on it--sheesh.
Turned out the Part Number for the plate supplied was the superseded version for the old P/No for the S/No plate we ordered.

Always a risk unscrupulous people will try and re-Serial Number a stolen unit with a replacement plate as such.

My experience and thoughts.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

Just experimenting here folks. I am NOT trying to manufacture these on a large scale for resale. At the moment, my friend has been using stainless steel blanks. We don’t know what or if they would work in aluminum.
There seems to be some interest, as my phones were a bit “busy” with people inquiring.
I will share any results when and if any tags are made, whether they be the serial tags or the large patent # plate/ lube chart plate, etc.
Thanks all, JM.

Hi JM,
no worries Mate, if your plates are of a different metal and font, and it is obvious that they are not original or being used to defraud anyone one would suspect that there would not be an issue--a court could determine otherwise should some unscrupulous person use one for such purposes.

Let us know how they turn out. I think it would be a nice option for someone if they have a machine that is missing a tag.

Eddie, do you happen to know what the font is on the serial # tags, and is it available? I like the shape of the 3 and 5 digits

Hi Neil,
never looked into it as I believe I was told that it was a Special for the job, as you know I have been wrong before.
Although it is likely an old style font carried over from Holt/Best days.

Not sure if I have a S/No tag in my Cat toolbox that I can check against by Googling Numeral Font Styles on line and see what we get--maybe later today as I have to shift the Nissan Patrol out of the garage to move the T/box etc.--too much stuff and not enough room on a suburban block.

A few for you to go on with 😊

JM, are these the sort of plates you are talking about, or just the smaller serial number plates? Les Heal and his son Byron over in England make the full range of plates back to original spec including the actual naval grade brass plate Cat used in the 1920's, sure would be nice if the ACMOC store sold them for members benefit, there's plates made for every type of early Cat tractor, exactly the same as the original.

They do not engrave serial numbers though, I remember hearing one of the ACMOC members in the USA had a set of the original stamps / punches, but I guess a good engraver could copy the original fonts.

I'll need to solve that issue on the old Cats I have here that had their original seat back plates stolen over the years, tractors like the 2 Ton, Fifteen and Ten.
All the best
Mike
