Could someone tell me what size socket I need to remove the nut on the piston of a D9G 4 barrel ripper cylinder. What is the torque of that same nut when putting it back on? I don't want to take it apart until I have the tools to do the repair. Thanks.

Hi murfman,
the best I can do is this scabby old photocopy of a chart scanned below.
The chart only works if you know the nut Part No from a Parts Book.

If you can give me the model number of your hydralic control I can likely get specs for ripper cylinder nut torque as the Cat Spec sheets I have go by HCU Model number for the cyl. nut specs.

Those 191/2/3 controls I have checked seem to be 860-1060 lbft for the ripper cyl. nut.

Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

I have come up with some info out of the D9H books......

9D ripper
s/n's 97L-up,22M1-up,39M1-up and 40M1-up

6J7810 ripper tip cyl group ( 8.25" bore X 20.70" stroke )
Rod diameter 3.498"
Nut torque - 3000ft lb (+/- 300ftlb)
4J6888 nut.......... Takes 4" socket
7X2725 repair kit

7J1487 ripper lift group ( 9.20" bore X 21.0" stroke )
Rod Diameter 3.248"
Nut torque - 3000ft lb (+/- 300ft lb )
4J6888 nut...... Takes 4" socket
146 9624 repair kit

I would imagine yours would be the same if you have quad rippers.

I can see some pretty dangerous antics going on trying to undo that nut and re-torque it at one and a half tons/foot, best thing to do is to get it into a hydraulic shop on a ram bench, the cost will outweigh the danger.

Thank you for all of your information, it sounds like a shop job. I am not real sure that I could get the 3000# torque.
Thanks again,

Thanks again,
G'day. The only way to safely get near that sort of torque is on a proper bench with a good torque multiplier.
