Looking for potential SN locations for this vintage of D9900 (Pic attached). Based on vintage of Radiator would suspect may have not been original radiator or potentially was a swap into a gas tractor.

Any help appreciated, Mahalo.

Should be on the left hand side, in front of the pony but behind the air cleaner. Very cool find!

Interesting radiator with extension on bottom to increase capacity, the standard DIESEL radiator is taller than the Gas SIXTY. The air cleaner is the later 3rd style 2B4215 Group.

Let us know what serial number is on the tag, Chad has indicated where to find it.

The tractor engines ran 1C1 - 1C157, that tag indicates a power unit, my guess it is all original including radiator, extremely collectable. I don't know how much is known about how many power units etc were made, or other information relating to them. Others with much more knowledge than my small brain has, may post on here. It would be good to know more about this engine and others that were made apart from tractor applications.

Are the two engines free? If you can, more photo's please.

Hi Team,
D9900 Industrial engines were built from 1932 to 1934.

Serial Number range starts at 4C3001-up. Total numbers not given in a sales kit Technical Bulletin titled "Model Identification Of Caterpillar Engines" Form No P717-15190, Issue Date 1-15-57.

Rated at 85 Intermittent HP at 700 Rpm. 4 cyl., 6 1/8" x 9 1/4"

Cheers,
Eddie B.

It looks like the D9900 Power Unit may have run from 4C3001 to 4C3122, according to the parts catalog, that is not the original radiator or air cleaner for that unit. No date on this Parts Catalog, earlier books usually have a date and later ones, but most of the books near this publication number have no date.

Then would it be fair to assume a total of 330 D9900 engines were built not including experimental engines such as 'Old Betsy'. It has been suggested to me that approximately 25 Diesel 70 tractors were converted into Diesel 75 tractors before leaving the factory and some of these engines were re numbered and sold as power units. Can anyone help with any facts supporting or refuting what actually happened, is this true or false?

1C1- 1C157 Diesel 60/65 tractors

4C3001 - 4C3122 Power Units

3E1 - 3E 51 Diesel 70 tractors

It would also be interesting to know how many of these engines have survived, running or not.
