I'm operating an old 8H at the moment and we are having massive problems with heat in the tc/tranny. Today it took 1 1/2 hrs to get it into the red, after a midday start.
The suction pipe from the bottom flange on the transmission to the screen and then the pump has been changed. The old metal pipe has been removed & replaced with a flexible hose- 1 1/4" id With 2 x 1" fittings on either end of the hose. The reason it was done is the the connection o ring on the old metal suction pipe could not be bought.
So is the heat coming from a suction pipe that is smaller or is the pump worn?
Today when it got hot, i put it in neutral and left the engine on full revs and it cooled down reasonably quickly. prob 5 mins. But if i idled it right back the heat stayed the same or got worse.
This dozer does not jump out of gear when hot however i sometimes have to wait untill the oil heats up a little very early in the morning to get it into gear- any gear.
What should the oil pressure be at the little bung on the transmission pump at the top right of the torque converter?
This machine still pulls like a trojan.
Both steering clutches work well. This problem has been coming on for about 3 weeks. where should i look? cheers

generally engine runs cool. if i run the engine flat out it will start to run hot & the tranny sort of cool. If i throtle back-cool engine, hot tranny.
radiator is clean.
the tranny oil cooler is also clean
new tranny oil filters

Check the ID of the original pipe, changing a pipe bore from 1.25" down to 1" can cause too much restriction for a part worn pump, the clues are there, it doesn't pick up cold oil in the morning and doesn't produce enough flow to keep the system cool. Low flow means you have little or no lube pressure in the transmission.

You said the problem has been coming on for about 3 weeks, does that coincide with the pipe to hose change or was it the first time it was run if the hose was fitted before that? Did it overheat previously?

Transmission pump pressure you asked about is 300 - 330 psi @ high idle and in neutral.

Should hold 90% of pressures read at low idle. Check and record in all gears.

Test the Transmission pressure at the filter top purge plug not at the pump for the best effect, I take it "All" the coolers have been stripped out and all the water tubes cleaned?

the 8 will have to be shut down untill we can find someone with pressure testers.
today it started to get hot after 2 hours & i nursed for another 3.5 hrs after that.
can anyone tell why this happens. when i'm on the decelerator the tranny cools down quickly but after i take my foot off it goes flying into the red.
are there any other screens other than the one near the pump & the one under the seat, that can be cleaned?
