Going to look at a D8H 46A next Tuesday. Is there any way a farm boy can tell the condition of the power shift? I don't want to buy something I'll have to sell the South 40 to fix the first time I use it. I was told once that there is a long or short track on D8Hs. How would I tell which type of a track this one has? How much difference would there be between my low horse D7E 47A and a low horse D8H 46A in demo work -- like taking out building sites? Thanks.

FarmerFred,
Check all the fluid levels, start her up and run for five minutes at about 1000rpm. Now select 2nd speed brakes full on and open the throttle to full rated speed do this for thirty seconds then decellerate momenterily then repeat the operation. keep an eye on the transmission and coolant gauges. get the tractor trans temp up to working temp and the then try all three speeds. This is a basic no tools field test in order to check the drive. Taking oil samples would be a good idea too. Maybe others can help you with some specs.
Regards Gordon.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
