Needing some help getting the pony motor started on my D8h. Has been sitting for some time. The pony motor cranks but doesn't have spark. I've pulled the mag off and when manually cranking it by hand it gives a good shock to your fingers but when I put a test light on it theres no signs of spark.

Hi,

a picture or description of make and model of your magneto will help us help you further.

A company called "oldcroak" has a good range of service manuals for most Cat magneto's as well as rebuild capacity---link below.

https://oldcroak.com/search.php?search_query=magneto%20service%20manuals&section=product

As a start I suggest cleaning the points with sand paper folded over for rigidity and does both sides at once, next draw clean heavy paper thru the points several times until the paper comes out clean. Recheck for spark using a spark plug--not a resistor type plug though--so as to see a good blue spark. Usually with the mag. cap off I attach a piece of 1/16" oxy welding wire to the mag body and situate the wire about 1/16" away from the coil tang and test away.

Good luck and Cheers,

Eddie B.

Common cause first things to check/do is clean points and check/replace condenser.

You can have a good shock on coil and nothing to the point its could be the condensor or the small wires loosed to the point bracket

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
